About the role
Job Title: Senior Line Cook
Reports to: Executive Chef

The Senior Line Cook plays a pivotal leadership role in the daily operations of Community Action Marin's Central Kitchen. This position combines advanced culinary expertise with operational oversight to ensure the consistent preparation, packaging, and delivery of nutritious, culturally relevant meals to children, families, and seniors across Marin County.
Working closely with the Kitchen Manager, the Senior Line Cook helps coordinate kitchen activities, uphold food quality and safety standards, and maintain a clean, efficient workspace. In the absence of the Kitchen Manager, this role assumes full supervisory responsibilitiesleading staff, managing workflow, and making key decisions to ensure uninterrupted service.
Kitchen Support & Food Preparation
- Lead the preparation and portioning of meals for agency programs, including early childhood education and senior services.
- Oversee the packaging of hot and cold meals in compliance with safety and nutritional guidelines.
- Maintain cleanliness of all cooking utensils, kitchen appliances, food prep surfaces, and floors on a daily basis and help oversee staff compliance.
- Ensure food prep and storage areas are organized, sanitary, and compliant with health and safety regulations and enforce staff compliance.
- Receive and inspect and verify deliveries of food and supplies; ensure proper labeling and restock dry storage, refrigerators, and freezers.
- Step into supervisory responsibilities when the Kitchen Manager is unavailable, ensuring meal preparation continues without disruption.
- Collaborate with the Head Cook to test and develop new, child-friendly, and culturally appropriate menu options.
- Assist with kitchen inventory tracking and communicate any shortages or equipment needs to the Kitchen
Food Delivery & Vehicle Maintenance
- Safely load packaged meals into insulated containers and delivery vehicles for distribution.
- Deliver meals and food products to designated program sites, following scheduled routes and delivery protocols.
- Communicate effectively with site staff and relay any instructions, concerns, or feedback to the kitchen team.
- Pick up fresh produce, food donations, or supply orders from vendors and local partners as needed.
- Perform daily cleaning of delivery vehicles, both interior and exterior, to ensure safe food transport.
- Complete weekly vehicle safety checks (tires, fluids, brakes, lights) and report any issues requiring maintenance to the Kitchen Manager immediately.
Leadership & Supervisory Support
- Serve as the point person for kitchen operations in the absence of the Kitchen Manager or Head Cook.
- Provide task guidance to kitchen assistants and volunteers to maintain workflow and meet deadlines.
- Monitor food quality, safety practices, and adherence to kitchen protocols while in a leadership role.
- Communicate clearly with staff to ensure proper execution of meal prep and delivery schedules.
- Support a positive team culture focused on respect, efficiency, and accountability
Qualifications
Education & Experience:
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent required.
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience working in the food service industry.
Skills and Abilities:
- Valid and current California Driver's License with a clean driving record, in accordance with CAM's auto and liability insurance.
- Must meet annual training requirements, including ten (10) hours of training in food safety and driver safety.
- Interest in the well-being of children and program participants, with strong interpersonal and teamwork skills.
- Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully with coworkers and program site staff.
- Commitment to maintaining personal hygiene and compliance with dress and health regulations.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.
- Deep understandingand ability to articulatethe role equity, inclusion, and diversity play in food access and service delivery
