Position Overview
The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) provides direct and indirect patient care, focusing on critically ill or injured patients. The RN performs a range of tasks, including diagnostic tests, monitoring patient recovery, and responding to medical emergencies. The ICU nurse demonstrates a highly analytical mindset and works collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team, patients' families, and designated friends to report progress or changes in condition. Compassion, empathy, and understanding are essential when a patient's condition deteriorates or when a patient expires.
The RN’s actions are guided by ethical considerations, compassion, and respect for the inherent dignity, worth, and unique attributes of each individual. Effective communication with patients, families, visitors, physicians, leadership, and colleagues is a priority. The RN ensures that patient safety is maintained at all times, delivering high-quality care in alignment with the organization’s mission and standards. Compensation is determined based on education, experience, certification, and internal equity. Hiring compensation starts at $34.00 per hour.

- Compensation: Starting at $34.00/hour, depending on experience. Benefits begin the first of the month following 60 days of employment. This position is non-exempt.

Key Responsibilities
- Provide specialized care to critically ill or injured patients in the ICU.
- Monitor and assess patients’ conditions, responding to changes with urgency and precision.
- Collaborate with the multidisciplinary healthcare team, including physicians and specialists, to ensure the highest level of care.
- Demonstrate compassion and respect for patients and their families, particularly in times of crisis.
- Maintain clear and accurate communication with patients, families, and healthcare teams.
- Follow ethical standards and hospital protocols to deliver safe, high-quality care.
- Respond effectively to emergencies and significant changes in patient conditions.
- Contribute to the development of personalized care plans in collaboration with physicians and other healthcare professionals.
- Promote a healthy work environment by maintaining positive relationships with colleagues and leadership.
Position Requirements
Minimum Education
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
Experience
- Previous experience as a registered nurse is preferred but not required.
- Previous healthcare experience in an acute or clinic setting is preferred.
- One year of experience in a similar role is preferred.
Required Registration/License/Certification
- Current licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of North Carolina.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association required at the time of hire.
- Additional certifications, such as Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), must be obtained within one year of hire.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of and ability to work within the scope of nursing practice, as outlined by licensure and hospital policies.
- Ability to communicate effectively and courteously with patients, families, staff, and physicians.
- Competency in delivering safe and effective patient care in line with hospital policies.
- Ability to demonstrate exceptional customer service to patients, families, staff, and physicians.
- Familiarity with data entry and the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system.
Physical Demands
- Ability to lift, position, and transfer patients up to and greater than 50 pounds.
- Requires manual dexterity and mobility, including bending, squatting, twisting, and turning.
- Prolonged sitting, standing, or walking may be required.
- Near acuity: ability to see clearly at 20 inches or less.
Working Conditions
- Regular exposure to the risk of blood-borne diseases.
- Frequently exposed to hazards from electrical/mechanical equipment, chemicals, and bodily fluids.
- Subject to irregular hours, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and emergency situations.
- Continuous standing and walking for periods greater than 8 hours per shift.
- May be required to sit for extended periods greater than 4 hours.
