The technologist works collaboratively with pathologists and laboratory staff to ensure optimal specimen preparation, accurate diagnostic results, and compliance with all regulatory and safety requirements. The position requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage workload priorities in a fast-paced hospital environment.
Essential Functions (list in order of importance)
1. Receives surgical and cytology specimens, determines acceptability of specimens according to laboratory guidelines and of the appropriateness and completeness of test order, resolves specimen problems without undue delay; maintains accurate specimen accessioning and maintains specimen's unique identity throughout the entire process
2. Routinely embeds, cuts with a microtome, stains and mounts tissue section from surgical and autopsy material; prepares microscopic slides with appropriate stains, controls and quality control on selected tissue sections as requested by pathologists. Prepares test reagents and stains following established procedures
3. Performs quality control procedures such as staining control slides on all procedures, recording data, troubleshooting problems if controls are questionable and taking and logging corrective action.
4. Effectively uses the functions of the computer systems in the department to enter information, retrieve results, billing charges and other information. Maintains safe/clean working conditions and does preventive maintenance on equipment; troubleshoots problems and makes repairs if possible or refers to supervisor, initiates service calls as needed
5. Assists pathologist in gross or frozen examinations of surgical pathology specimens, assists in collection of samples for FNA analysis
6. Prepares cytological material by receiving and logging specimens, preparing slides and cell blocks from body fluids and exudates

· Associates Degree in Laboratory Science
· 60 semester hours including 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry
· 3 months to 1 year of experience
· Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
· HT (ASCP) or equivalent is preferred
· Possess critical thinking skills
