Functioning within the Health System’s mission, values, objectives, procedures and policies the Surgical Outpatient Unit Registered Nurse is responsible and accountable for the delivery of individualized nursing care to patients having surgical intervention. Pre and post operatively, incorporating current clinical knowledge with established nursing practice, based on ASPAN standards, The RN performs nursing interventions utilizing the nursing process. Interviewing and assessments are performed to identify potential or actual problems and reported to Anesthesia provider. The RN appropriately documents all nursing care and interventions in a timely manner, and is responsible for reviewing the patient’s chart and health history to assure all necessary pre-op evaluations have been completed. In addition to preparing patients for surgery, the RN provides ongoing information to the patient and caregiver to assure they understand all procedures and answer questions appropriately. The RN gives a hand-off report to other health care team members to ensure continuity of care. S/he receives patients post-operatively and is responsible for the assessment and evaluation of each patient. The RN monitors the patient during the phase 2 recovery period, providers care per ASPAN standards, and ensures the patient is prepared for discharge by providing necessary education to the patient and his/her caregiver. On call response time within 30 minutes required.
Education: Must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing. A BSN is preferred.
Licensure/Certification: Must have a valid unrestrictedRN license for the State of Ohio. Current BLS required. Must have PALS and ACLS upon hire or within 90 days. CPAN and/or CAPA certification is preferred.
Experience: Two years of previous pre-operative or ambulatory surgery experience is required. Telemetry experience is also required.
Skills: Must have documented strong knowledge of surgical procedures and management of the surgical patient, exceptional technical skills, and the proven ability to work in a team as well as independently. Excellent critical thinking, prioritization, delegation, organizational and communication skills, including the ability to exhibit patience and tact with all constituents including physicians, patients and associates, are required. Must also demonstrate the ability to work in a fast paced environment and quickly adapt to changes throughout the unit, be cooperative and collaborative, and have the ability to work efficiently while in stressful situations.Must have basic computer skills and a working knowledge of the internet; be proactive and confident in advocating for patients and their family members; and be flexible with work schedule changes.
