About the role
We are seeking a skilled Site Reliability Engineer with a strong focus on optimizing and maintaining WordPress websites. The ideal candidate will be responsible for ensuring high availability, performance, and scalability of WordPress-based systems. This role combines technical expertise with operational excellence to support a growing portfolio of WordPress websites.
This role is to be based in Malta.
Roles & Responsibilities:
- Performance Optimization:
- Monitor, analyze, and optimize WordPress site performance, ensuring fast load times and seamless user experiences.
- Implement caching solutions (e.g., Varnish, Redis, WP Rocket) and Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) like Cloudflare.
- Minimize bloat by optimizing themes, plugins, and databases.
- Site Reliability & Uptime:
- Maintain and enhance monitoring and alerting systems for uptime, errors, and performance using tools like Datadog or similar.
- Plan and execute strategies for high availability and fault tolerance
- Perform capacity planning to anticipate traffic spikes and scalability needs.
- Security:
- Implement and maintain security best practices for WordPress, including WAF (Web Application Firewalls), SSL certificates, and regular vulnerability scans.
- Manage malware prevention, detection, and remediation tools (e.g., Wordfence, Sucuri).
- Harden WordPress installations, server configurations, and databases.
- Infrastructure Management:
- Manage hosting environments optimized for WordPress (e.g., Nginx, Apache, PHP-FPM).
- Configure and maintain database solutions (e.g., MySQL, MariaDB)
- Automate routine operations like backups, updates, and deployments using tools like Ansible, Terraform, or similar.
- DevOps Practices:
- Establish CI/CD pipelines tailored to WordPress development workflows.
- Collaborate with developers to integrate new features into production without downtime.
- Manage version control systems (e.g., Git) for code changes across themes and plugins.
- Incident Management:
- Investigate and resolve incidents related to performance, functionality, or outages.
- Conduct root cause analysis and implement preventive measures for recurring issues.
- Documentation & Collaboration:
- Create and maintain technical documentation for configurations, processes, and troubleshooting guides.
- Collaborate with development and stakeholders to align technical solutions with business needs.
Requirements:
- 4+ years in an SRE, DevOps, or similar role
- Industry Certifications in AWS, Google Cloud, or a related technology.
- Technical Expertise:
- Strong knowledge of WordPress architecture, including themes, plugins, and custom post types.
- Proficiency in PHP, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and MySQL.
- Experience with server administration in Linux-based environments.
- Familiarity with modern hosting solutions such as AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure.
- Performance Tools & Technologies:
- Proficient with performance monitoring tools like Lighthouse, or GTmetrix.
- Hands-on experience with caching tools and CDNs.
- Problem Solving:
- Proven ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues in production environments.
- Experience with log analysis and debugging tools.
- Additional Skills:
- Experience with automation tools like Jenkins, Ansible, or Docker.
- Knowledge of DNS configurations and domain management.
- Familiarity with SEO best practices and their technical implementation in WordPress.
