Job Summary
Under the general supervision of the Chief Nursing Officer, the Director of Nursing Emergency Department assists with the planning, organizing, directing, controlling and evaluation of nursing service and education programs of the hospital, diagnostic and treatment center or a major unit within the Department of Nursing. This includes analyzing clinical practice and identifying opportunities to increase quality, safety, effectiveness and efficiency within service care areas; identifying clinical indicators to measure, evaluate and improve care; maintaining compliance with all clinical policies, procedures and regulations; supervision of registered nurses and other healthcare providers who deliver nursing care. The Director ensures that safe patient care is provided by qualified, competent, patient care staff to all patients who present to the service.
S/he works cooperatively with administrators, physicians, staff, other managers and all customers of Carewell Health Medical Center.
Essential Functions
o The Director of Nursing Emergency Department participates in the developing philosophy, objectives, policies, and standards of Nursing service and education
o The Director of Nursing Emergency Department is responsible for developing and implementing staffing plans, directing recruitment, and selection of personnel
o Develops, plans, coordinates, directs and evaluates projects and programs aligned with Mission, Vision, and strategic goals of the organization and ensures that the highest level of patient care is delivered.
o Responsible for day to day operations of nursing service
o Responsible for overall quality operations (24/7 accountability) of the Emergency Department including clinical supervision, staff retention and recruitment, fiscal budget, cost containment, position control, and outcomes measurement of clinical indicators.
o Manages staff; interviews, hires and trains; evaluates employee performance; deals with performance problems as appropriate; delegates work assignments effectively.
o Promotes an optimum environment in which the patient care team can accomplish mutually developed goals.
o Investigates patient complaints and/or incidents, initiating corrective and/or disciplinary action. Maintains an ongoing evaluation of customer service to ensure that systems, policies, and procedures are patient and family centered
o Ensures compliance with requirements of federal, state and community agencies, regulatory authorities, and hospital policies and procedures.
o Selects and monitors preceptors in development of their role to facilitate new grad hires incorporation into the unit staff.
o Ensures the design, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs for staff. May provide education planning, documentation, and record keeping for assigned unit(s).
o Provides an experience and environment of patient- and family-centered care.
o Interprets impact of broad scope organizational change for staff and develops change strategies for successful implementation.
o Plans with education department orientation and in-service training for staff members
o Responsible for on-going performance evaluation, guidance and development of personnel
o Coordinates and/or assists with the development of annual reports, resource guides and other departmental publications
o Promotes service line programs and activities in the community
o Continually assesses all services, identifies problems, utilizes data to analyze and propose innovative approaches for solutions.
o Maintain records related to operations and services that are complete, accurate, available, and in compliance with all legal, regulatory, and policy requirements.
o Engages staff and other stakeholders in continuous improvement of systems and processes; manages resources for staff participation in improvement work activities. Ensures effective facilitation of improvement teams and development of leadership skills to ensure overall effectiveness of the meetings.
o Organizes and prioritizes time and resources to manage efficiency. Appropriately delegates.
o Creates an environment that encourages diverse opinion, recognizes differences and incorporates into process and services.
o Creates a culture and systems for recognizing and rewarding staff.
o Develops and implements recruitment and retention strategies that support a culture of leadership. Identifies and addresses own professional growth needs.
o Assesses manager and staff development needs, identifies goals and provides resources. Identifies lack of competency in performance and establishes a plan which includes goals, interventions and measures.
o Maintains membership in professional organization(s) to develop knowledge and resources through networking, continuing education, and participation in national, regional, and/or local activities.
o Ensures integration of ethical standards and core values into everyday work activities.
o Manages the complex interdepartmental and interdisciplinary relationships to assure collaboration and effective/efficient operations.
o Covers House Supervision and AOC on call as needed.
o Provide coverage for related service lines as needed. Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervises care given by nonprofessional personnel, providing instruction as needed. Regularly attends unit conferences and makes recommendations for improvement in patient care via the patient care conference and unit conference. Participates in peer review as appropriate to the unit and Department of Nursing Assumes responsibility for professional growth by current reading and attendance at educational programs and unit conference. Seeks guidance when encountering nursing procedures and responsibilities that have not been mastered.

Minimum Education/Certifications
Graduate of an accredited program in nursing Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN).
Master’s of Science in Nursing (MSN), MBA, Advanced Practice, Health Administration preferred
Certified Emergency Nurse Specialization (CEN) preferred; TCCN certification preferred
Current Registered Nurse license to practice in the state of NJ.
Certifications required: BLS (American Heart Association), ACLS - Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support and PALS – Pediatric Advanced Life Support.
IV Certification required
Three years of management and/or supervisory experience in Hospital setting preferred.
At least 5 years of clinical practice Hospital Emergency department

Minimum Work Experience
At least five years of experience in the emergency department, including managerial.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: Must be willing to work holidays, weekends and provide additional coverage as needed
