JOB SUMMARY & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Director of School-Based Behavioral Health provides strategic, operational, and clinical leadership for Valle del Sol's school-based behavioral health programs. This position is responsible for program development, service delivery, workforce management, quality outcomes, financial performance, community partnerships, and regulatory compliance across school-based service locations.
Using a trauma-informed, culturally responsive, student-centered, and family-focused approach, the Director partners with school districts, community organizations, healthcare providers, and internal stakeholders to expand access to behavioral health services and improve outcomes for children, adolescents, and families. This role promotes sustainable growth, operational excellence, and the integration of behavioral health services within educational settings.
Strategic Leadership & Program Development
Provide strategic direction, oversight, and development of school-based behavioral health programs, ensuring alignment with organizational goals, educational priorities, community needs, and opportunities for growth.Develop and implement program goals, objectives, and performance measures that support quality outcomes, operational excellence, and sustainable service delivery.Lead program expansion, innovation, and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance access to behavioral health services for children, adolescents, and families.Advocate for school-based behavioral health services and the integration of behavioral health within educational settings.
Clinical Quality & Compliance
Ensure the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based, trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and family-centered behavioral health services across all program locations.Establish and maintain clinical standards, policies, procedures, and best practices consistent with organizational, regulatory, and accreditation requirements.Monitor program effectiveness through data analysis, outcome measurement, and quality improvement activities; utilize data-driven decision-making to improve service delivery and patient outcomes.Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, payer, accreditation, licensing, privacy, and ethical standards, including AHCCCS, HIPAA, FERPA, and Joint Commission requirements.Support crisis response, risk management, and patient safety initiatives.
Leadership & Workforce Development
Recruit, hire, develop, supervise, and evaluate staff, ensuring appropriate staffing levels and workforce planning across service locations.Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing team culture through coaching, mentorship, accountability, and professional development.Provide clinical consultation, leadership support, and operational guidance to licensed and unlicensed staff as appropriate.
Operations Management
Oversee program operations, productivity, documentation, billing, contracts, grants, budgets, and resource allocation to ensure financial sustainability and operational effectiveness.Monitor performance indicators and operational metrics to ensure program goals, productivity expectations, and service delivery standards are achieved.Prepare reports, presentations, and program updates for organizational leadership, funders, regulatory agencies, and community stakeholders.Support grant management, contract compliance, and program evaluation activities.
Community Partnerships & Stakeholder Engagement
Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with school districts, educational leaders, families, healthcare providers, community organizations, and other stakeholders.Serve as the primary organizational liaison for school-based behavioral health services and represent Valle del Sol in meetings, committees, coalitions, and community partnerships.Promote awareness of behavioral health services and strengthen community partnerships that support student success and whole-person wellness.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Required:
Master's degree in Counseling, Marriage and Family Therapy, Social Work, Addiction Counseling, or a related behavioral health field from an accredited institution.
Preferred:
Additional coursework or training in leadership, supervision, healthcare administration, quality improvement, integrated care, or organizational development.Advanced training in behavioral health leadership or administration
Experience
Required:
Minimum of seven (7) years of experience in behavioral health.At least five (5) years of leadership experience overseeing adult and/or youth behavioral health programs or services.Demonstrated experience managing multiple programs, teams, and performance outcomes.
Preferred:
Experience managing behavioral health programs, including specialty services.Experience with budget development, financial oversight, and grant or contract management.Knowledge of Arizona behavioral health regulations and evidence-based practices.
Licensure/Certification
Required:
Preferred:
Additional certifications relevant to behavioral health services or leadership.Meets Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiners requirements to provide clinical supervision to associate-level licensees.
Other Requirements
Must be at least 18 years of age.Must be authorized to work in the United States.Must be able to pass pre- and continued employment screenings successfully.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of behavioral health regulations, accreditation standards, and school-based service delivery models.Knowledge of AHCCCS, RBHA, HIPAA, FERPA, Joint Commission, and related regulatory requirements.Knowledge of program development, quality improvement, workforce planning, and change management principles.Strong leadership, organizational, and relationship-building skills.Strong strategic planning, operational management, and problem-solving abilities.Ability to analyze data, monitor performance, and drive operational and clinical improvements.Ability to manage budgets, contracts, grants, and program resources effectively.Ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and support employee engagement and development.Strong verbal, written, presentation, and stakeholder communication skills.Ability to build collaborative partnerships with school districts, community organizations, healthcare providers, and government agencies.Proficiency in Microsoft Office (O365), Electronic Health Record systems, and data reporting platforms.Ability to provide culturally responsive, trauma-informed, student-centered, and family-focused leadership and services.
WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work Environment
This position may operate in clinical, office, or community settings including clinics, administrative offices, outreach locations, client homes, partner agencies, and community sites. Employees may interact with individuals experiencing behavioral health challenges, emotional distress, or complex social needs. Standard safety precautions and personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required as applicable.

Schedule & Travel
Work schedules may vary based on program needs and may include evening or weekend hours. Some positions may require local travel between Valle del Sol sites or community locations.

Employees must maintain compliance with all Valle del Sol policies and applicable regulatory requirements, which may include:
Licensure, certification, credentialing, and/or privileging requirements applicable to the position.Required immunizations and occupational health clearances.Tuberculosis (TB) testing and Hepatitis B screening or declination, when applicable.Arizona Level I Fingerprint Clearance Card when required by law or program.Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record when operating a vehicle for company business.Completion and maintenance of required training, certifications, and continuing education.
