Position Purpose: Assesses financial needs of new and established patients related to clinical care according to specified protocol. Provides services in areas of financial need to patients, families, and the health care team as appropriate. Provides patient and health care team education, links to resources and data collection in accordance with the process identified. This position reports to the Director, Oncology Services (IP/OP/Clinics) with matrix reporting to Director, Revenue Cycle and Director, Social Services.
Key Job Activities: Financial Navigation/Advocacy
- With a high level of initiative, assesses the financial needs of patients, establishes a positive supportive relationship, assists in developing a plan of care and thoroughly documents the findings, recommendations and interventions made.
- Communicates and collaborates with the treatment team concerning the financial implications of medical intervention on both the patient and the health care provider. In collaboration with the ordering physician, recommends treatment interventions that best fit the patient’s medical and financial needs.
- Interacts and coordinates with Medicare, Medicaid, insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies, and governmental and community patient assistance programs as an advocate and champion for the patient.
- Assists patients in steering through applicable financial applications and adjusts plan as indicated.
- Coordinates with Patient Access Services to ensure referrals, certifications, and pre-authorizations are accurate, timely, current, and consistent with treatment plans for patients. Plan Development/Management
- Interviews and assesses patients and patient’s significant others to develop an appropriate financial plan of care to compliment the clinical plan of care.
- Prepares and maintains appropriate records and reports such as assessments and progress notes.
- Attends and participates in oncology meetings, case conferences, and family meetings.
Education and Work Experience:
- Bachelors preferred
- Two years in medical field working with the financial needs of patients preferred.
- Experience with Medicare health plans, COBRA regulations, Medicaid guidelines, PAP and co-pay assistance programs preferred. Knowledge and Skills:
- A thorough knowledge of Health insurance guidelines, programs and plans; patient assistance programs, co-pay assistance programs, Medicaid, Medicare health plans, COBRA guidelines and the ability to find new programs that could assist patients with their financial needs preferred.
- Competently use a standard desktop and windows based computer system, including a basic understanding of email, e-learning, intranet and computer navigation. Ability to use other software as required to perform the essential functions of the job.
- Experience in EPIC and MEDITECH software systems preferred.
Certifications/Licenses:
- State of Illinois LPN License
