Critical Care Specialty Pool Nurse (SCPN)
As the Specialty Clinical Pool RN (SCN), you will be providing professional skilled, age-specific nursing care for patients in collaboration with the physician and other members of Valleywise Health staff. You’ll perform all aspects of patient care, including but not limited to:
The SCN provides, or delegates care according to Valleywise Health policies, functions as a client advocate and educator, completes and processes all required documentation, indirectly supervises ancillary personnel as directed, and participates in team building and quality improvement activities. This position demonstrates professional skills and behaviors to promote comprehensive, cost-effective, and meaningful healthcare for consumers in a diverse healthcare environment.
Under the direction of a Nurse Manager or Supervisor, the Specialty Clinical Nurse who specializes in medical acute care will be required to demonstrate competency in at least five (5) of the following clinical areas while being able to work at any of the medical facilities, including our clinics:
Hourly FLAT Rate: $74.00
Qualifications
Education:
- Must have graduated from an accredited school of nursing.
- Prefer a bachelor’s degree or higher in Nursing.
Experience:
- Requires two years (2) of clinical nursing experience as an RN in a psychiatric setting and demonstrates an understanding of the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
or
- Requires two years (2) of clinical nursing experience in an RN medical setting that demonstrates an understanding of the required knowledge, skills and abilities of each unit that you may be required to work in.
- If assigned to a Behavioral Health facility. Pursuant to Arizona Administrative Code R9-10-306 CHAPTER 10 of the Dept. of Health Services, personnel must be at least 21 years of age, or at least 18 years of age and licensed or certified under A.R.S. Title 32 and providing services within the personnel member’s scope of practice.
Specialized Training:
- CPI certification training will be provided upon hire/transfer to department and must be obtained prior to providing patient care within behavioral health. For non-behavioral health areas must be obtained within 90 days.
Certification/Licensure:
- Must possess a current, valid Arizona RN license and be in good standing with the AZ Board of Nursing.
- Requires a Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) cards from an approved American Heart Association training facility. The certificate must be renewed at minimum every two years.
- In addition, if you work in one of the following areas, you must have:
- Antepartum Testing Center: Advanced Fetal Monitoring Certification
- Burn: Must obtain PALS certification upon start date.
- Critical Care: Must obtain PALS certification upon start date; including one of the following certifications: TNCC, ATNC, or TCAR certification upon start date.
- Family Health Centers (FHC): NRP, PALS, Chemo-certified, triage certification, CCRN and/or RNC certifications are strongly preferred.
- L&D: NRP must be completed.
- NICU: NRP is required within upon start date.
- OR: CNOR certification is preferred.
- PACU: PALS required upon start date, including one of the following certifications: ATCN, TNCC, or TCAR.
- Peds: PALS certification is required upon start date.
- Peds ED: PALS and ENPC and one of the following certifications: TNCC, ATCN, or TCAR upon date.
- Post Partum: NRP is required upon start date, Intermediate Fetal Monitoring is preferred, and PALS may be required.
- PreOp: Must have PALS upon hire.
- SICU: Must obtain ATCN, TNCC or TCAR
Other requirements:
- Employees must successfully complete their competencies review for each specialty area within ninety (90) days of beginning this program.

About the Position:
- SCN employees will be classified up to a .9 full-time equivalent (FTE).
- The SCN will be scheduled on an as-needed basis, based on the needs of the department.
- The SCN will not be guaranteed a schedule.
- The SCN will be one of the first to be called off.
- The SCN will receive a flat rate per hour.
- The SCN will not qualify for merit or annual increases.
- SCN will not qualify for any benefits unless they qualify under the ACA guidelines.
- The SCN may be required to contribute to the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) depending on the employees’ hours worked.
- The SCN will complete required competencies and training sessions.
- The SCN will be required to work their required FTE hours per pay period unless the hospital has canceled the shift(s).
- The SCN must be able to complete their annual competencies within the specified timeframe to continue in the SCN program.
Compensation details: 74-74 Hourly Wage
