Summary
The West Seattle Link Extension Communications Specialist will support day-to-day communications and community engagement for West Seattle Link Extension, a major regional project for Sound Transit. The role includes writing and developing outreach materials, planning and conducting community engagement activities, and coordination with other consultants, the client, and the community. This work is based in Seattle and can include meetings at Sound Transit’s offices in Seattle and outreach around the region. This is a hybrid position. The selected candidate can work remotely but is also expected to conduct in-person outreach in Seattle.
The successful candidate will work collaboratively and have excellent verbal and written communications skills, as well as demonstrated commitment to social, environmental, and racial justice. A qualified candidate will also have experience supporting successful outreach campaigns to reach diverse audiences, including internal and external audiences. Experience and strong interest in consulting, transportation, infrastructure development, environmental stewardship, and coordination with the public sector is also desirable with additional preference for candidates who bring experience in strategic or political communications and engagement
Duties and Responsibilities
Develop and implement communications and engagement strategies and plans for the West Seattle Link Extension Project. Monitor project schedules and coordinate with subject matter experts to identify and communicate potential community impacts and opportunities for engagement. Plan and manage community outreach activities, including in-person booths at fairs and festivals, virtual and in-person briefings, and community and project partner meetings. Attend in-person meetings, site tours, and events in West Seattle, SODO, and Downtown Seattle. Coordinate with project partners including internal and external agency leadership teams, community members and businesses, and community-based organizations. Develop and execute communications and engagement plans that effectively reach diverse audiences, including Black, Indigenous, and other communities of color; people with disabilities; people with low incomes; and people who use languages other than English. Research, write, and edit responses to questions and correspondence from community members. Research, write, and edit content for message platforms, project update emails, direct mailings, social media, fact sheets, flyers, presentations, summary reports, and websites, including editing technical information and information for public audiences. Produce PowerPoint presentations and meeting summaries for project staff, agency partners, and communities.
Project Management
Plan, schedule, and track project activities. Manage and mentor a small project communications team. Set priorities and review work products. Collaborate with a multi-agency communications team to produce high quality client deliverables. Oversee tasks to deliver work on time, within budget, and on target with objectives; troubleshoot any issues as they arise. Follow up with team members to manage workflow and identify and manage potential risks and opportunities. Coordinate a plan/response to immediate client needs or situations.
Client Relations
Set and maintain the highest client service standards as a representative of PRR. Provide responsive and timely information to clients. Maintain confidentiality of client information. Anticipate and respond to client needs.
Administrative
Maintain or exceed 90% billable utilization goals while proactively completing tasks. Complete accurate daily timesheets. Submit expense reports on time and with accurate information. Coordinate with interdisciplinary teams, including accounting, design, research, marketing, and language services.
Experience/Education
4-5 years of work experience in strategic communications, public relations, public affairs, community engagement, and/or consulting is desirable. Experience working as a task lead or project manager on large projects. Experience working in customer or client service and/or the public sector is highly desirable.
Skills Required
Interest in transportation, built environment, community development, and/or public infrastructure projects. Proficient with PCs and MS software, including Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Strong analytical skills with the ability to anticipate issues, evaluate alternatives, and recommend effective solutions. Strong meeting facilitation skills, especially for public meetings, community workshops, and agency coordination. Capacity to resolve conflicts, ensuring all parties remain aligned with project goals. Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple communication channels, deadlines, and requests. Strong verbal and written communication, including the ability to clearly convey technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences. Strong work ethic and ability to take initiative, work independently, efficiently and with dedication to quality.
Desirable, but not Essential, Skills and Interests
Ability to interpret project information such as design plans, construction phasing diagrams, traffic detours, schedules, and design plans to translate them into clear public messaging. Experience coordinating with agency staff, municipal agencies, transportation authorities, and permitting bodies. Experience with consultant work including familiarity and understanding of utilization metrics and internal/external responsibilities. Familiarity with state and federal public involvement requirements and common public sector communication standards. Multilingual skills, written and verbal. Understanding of civil engineering principles, light rail design standards, construction sequencing, and environmental considerations. Valid driver’s license and willingness to attend site visits, public meetings, and community events
The pay range for this role is:90,000 - 105,000 USD per year(Seattle, WA)
