SSA Marine is seeking an Assistant Superintendent to join our SSA Marine Canada team. This full-time, permanent position is based at our office in North Vancouver and reports to the Operations Manager, Ship Ops.
The Position
Assists in providing on-site supervision of operations personnel including planning, coordination, reporting and follow-up of ship loading and discharging activities in accordance with productivity, safety, and quality standards. This position is designed as a training and development role for the incumbent to potentially assume a Ship Operations Superintendent role. It will begin with shadowing Superintendents and learning all aspects of the role. The incumbent will assume responsibilities as they become proficient by developing and demonstrate their ability to perform the duties of a superintendent.
You will be part of a motivated and diverse team and will have a high degree of interaction with all employees throughout the organization.
Responsibilities & Activities
- Support the implementation and enforcement of corporate Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) policies, including vessel inspections, incident investigations, PPE usage, confined space protocols, and spill reporting
- Monitor and report non-compliance issues, ensuring corrective actions are taken promptly
- Facilitate cargo operation planning by liaising with shipping lines, agents, supercargoes, transportation providers, and import/export stakeholders
- Participate in pre-operational planning meetings to assess cargo configurations and operational requirements
- Provide on-site supervision of cargo loading and discharge activities across SSA Marine Canada’s contracted vessels, ensuring safety, efficiency, and environmental stewardship
- Maintain operational oversight during and outside regular hours, collaborating with forepersons to optimize service delivery
- Apply knowledge of collective agreements to support union workforce management and resolve operational issues
- Assist in the recruitment and onboarding of forepersons, including providing feedback and supporting the 90-day integration process
- Support vessel-specific training programs in collaboration with the BCMEA and internal operations teams
- Participate in the administration and resolution of work refusal cases, ensuring compliance with regulatory procedures
- Provide timely updates to stakeholders regarding production metrics, stowage challenges, labour and equipment status, and estimated completion timelines
- Participate in post-operation meetings and incident investigations, offering insights for operational enhancements
- Identify and support opportunities for innovation in cargo handling and operational efficiency
Qualifications & Skills
- Formal post-secondary diploma or degree in related discipline
- Solid background in ship stevedoring or marine industry preferred
- Knowledge of general operational procedures is an asset
- Understanding/interpretation of Collective Agreement and its application (Foremen and Longshore)
- Understanding and applying Company policies and SOPs
- A basic understanding of rigging
- Mathematics & trigonometry is an asset
- Strong communication skills
- Self-Awareness
- Valid driver’s license
- Strong interpersonal and innovative/problem solving skills
- Leadership ability
- Able to work varied/extended shifts
