Job Title: Grinder Operator

Schedule: 1st shift, Hours: 5am-3:30pm Mon-Thursday
Overtime may be required Fridays and Saturdays
GRINDER OPERATOR SUMMARY
The Grinder is responsible for grinding and chipping metal workpieces to shape edges, remove excess material, and eliminate defects such as cracks and holes, following job orders, blueprints, and work instructions. This role requires precision, attention to detail, and adherence to safety protocols to maintain product quality and workplace safety.
GRINDER OPERATOR ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Operate cranes, hoists, and forklifts safely and effectively to transport castings to and from machines using air hoists and/or cranes.
- Remove excess metal from castings using pneumatic hand grinders, stand grinders, or chisels in portable grinders/power hammers.
- Grind portable parts on pedestal grinders, removing sharp edges, burrs, pits, and cracks, and clean splatter or rust to improve the appearance of workpieces.
- Inspect workpieces for defects, ensuring quality standards are met.
- Inspect hooks, slings, chains, cranes, hoists, and grinders to ensure they are in safe operating condition and not used beyond weight limits.
- Perform preventive maintenance inspections on tools and production equipment daily to ensure safe operating conditions.
- Position workpieces manually or with a jib crane, following guidelines or maneuvering workpieces around stationary grinding wheels.
- Dress and maintain grinding wheels for optimal performance.
- Complete production requirements on a daily and weekly basis.
- Communicate with other grinders, forklift drivers, and machinists to improve product flow to the Finish Department.
- Lift and move parts and objects weighing up to 100 lbs., frequently positioning them in difficult work
GRINDER OPERATOR QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Grinding Experience is a Plus
- High school diploma or GED, or 1–3 months of related experience/training preferred.
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
- Ability to read and understand simple instructions, memos, and work orders.
- Basic math skills, including adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing whole numbers.
- Ability to apply common sense to follow detailed but straightforward instructions.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to detect material defects.
- Regularly required to stand and use hands.
- Frequently required to walk, reach with arms, and communicate effectively.
- Must regularly lift and move up to 50 lbs.
