GENERAL SUMMARY
-
The Director of Safety and Security and Emergency Management is responsible for the overall operation and direction of the Safety and Security department including planning, directing, evaluating, and improving department activities. A high level of independence in performance of the role and/or solution of problems is expected; however, demonstrated cooperation and collaboration is equally essential for successful functioning. Reports to a member of the senior management team.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Provides long-term planning for the health system’s security, environmental safety and emergency management including but not limited to the areas of human resources, technology, regulatory compliance, quality, community coordination and finances.

Serves as the organization’s key member of the emergency response team. Identifies emergency management training needs, conducts vulnerability assessments and develops and implements a comprehensive emergency management training program.

Consults with officials within local and area governments, hospitals and other institutions to determine needs and capabilities in the event of a natural disaster or other emergency. May serve on various statewide councils and committees on emergency management.

Guides the day to day operational activities of the department and works collaboratively with various Department Leaders to ensure safe and secure environments.

Establishes and maintains a process for organizing and managing service agreements, contracts, regulatory documents, policies and procedures and any other required documentation.

Assesses the department performance, identifies opportunities for improvement and executes plans for improvement.

Leads, manages, coaches, and trains a team or department, provides guidance, support, and mentors to ensure optimal performance and productivity.

Oversees the recruitment, hiring, team/department orientation, performance appraisals and disciplinary actions including up to termination processes for a team or department.

Performs other duties as assigned.

LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS
-
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
-
Bachelor’s degree required.

A Master’s Degree preferred.
-
A minimum of 10 years of experience in safety, security and emergency management in a healthcare facility is required.
-
Proficient skills in word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook) and other applicable software.
-
Demonstrates performance of high level decision-making in operational management capacity.

Proven verbal and written communication skills and success in dealing with high level administration.
-
Proven knowledge of broad based management methods and implementation techniques.

Proven ability in leading, counseling, motivating and committing to the department’s & organization’s goals.

Skilled in handling multiple tasks and responding and developing action plans quickly when urgent needs arise.

Proven ability in developing and maintaining relationships with higher management, peers and subordinates and skilled in resolving conflicts and cooperating with others.

Proven experience in planning, organizing, administering, coordinating, reviewing, evaluating and participating effectively in in the maintenance of a safe, secure and all hazards prepared environment.

Skilled in developing and directing the implementation of goals, objectives, policies, procedures, management systems, work standards and program evaluation.

Skilled in creating and maintaining a team atmosphere and representing the department in a positive manner.

Must have knowledge of various codes and regulations that pertains to healthcare, ambulatory healthcare and business occupancies.

Must be able to demonstrate experience and skills in motivation of employees for peak performance and creative thinking regarding departmental operations.

Must meet the insurability policy requirements to drive a CHKD vehicle.
-
Must be able to pass the CHKD driving test within 30 days of employment.
