Position Overview:
Tract is seeking a results-oriented High Voltage Engineer to join Tract's Utility Development team. The successful candidate will be responsible for collaborating with electric utilities, EPC firms and subcontractors to deliver electrical infrastructure in support of Tract's data center campuses. You will be responsible for the design, construction, and commissioning of transmission and substation electrical infrastructure for our data centers. You will work closely with a multidisciplinary team to ensure the successful integration of high voltage equipment and systems into the overall data center infrastructure.
Working with the Utility Development team, you will support multiple technically complex projects to deliver electrical infrastructure and power commitments in various locations in the US. Given that this is a small team, you can expect daily transitions from strategic to tactical. You must be comfortable with business ambiguity and working in an entrepreneurial environment.
Responsibilities:
Design and Engineering:
- Scrutinize detailed electrical designs for substation infrastructure, including transformers, switchgear, protection systems, and associated equipment to assure design intent meets Tract criteria.
- Provide technical leadership for electrical power systems, focusing on reliability, redundancy, scalability, and innovation in design practices.
- Evaluate load flow studies, short circuit analysis, and voltage drop calculations to ensure reliable and efficient power supply.
- Ensure compliance with relevant electrical codes, standards, and regulations.
- Develop electrical infrastructure cost estimates for Tract projects.
Construction and Project Management:
- Support the PM to oversee the construction and installation of substation electrical infrastructure, coordinating with the electric utility's contractors and suppliers to ensure timely and high-quality execution.
- Conduct site visits and inspections to ensure adherence to design specifications and safety standards.
- Monitor project progress, identify and address potential issues, and provide technical guidance to the PM team.
Equipment Procurement Support:
- Develop and maintain Tract standards and specifications for substation high voltage (HV) and medium voltage (MV) equipment.
- Provide technical engineering support for procurement activities related to substation long-lead equipment (circuit breakers, transformers, switchgear, etc).
- Refine and own program management program for substation long-lead equipment.
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
- Engage with external stakeholders such as utility providers, vendors, contractors, and engineering consultants to coordinate power system designs and upgrades.
- Support site selection teams by conducting power feasibility studies, evaluating grid availability, and identifying potential substation locations. Collaborate on site design and civil works to support substation design and deployment.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Prepare technical specifications, engineering reports, and other documentation related to transmission and substation infrastructure design and construction.
- Maintain accurate records of project activities, including drawings, test results, and equipment documentation.
- Prepare progress reports and communicate project updates to stakeholders.
Experience Qualifications:
- The successful candidate will have experience and practical expertise in the following:
- Bachelor's degree in engineering (electrical preferred) or a related field.
- Seven+ years of relevant experience in high voltage engineering, preferably in transmission and substation design and construction.
- In-depth knowledge of electrical power systems, including transformers, switchgear, protection systems, and related equipment.
- Strong understanding of electrical codes, standards, and regulations (ANSI/IEEE/NFPA/NERC/etc).
- Proven project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
- Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, contractors, and stakeholders.
- Individuals must be able to pivot from technical engineering details and be comfortable presenting and discussing concepts and ideas with high-level executives.
- Willingness to travel to project sites as needed.
Preferred Experience and Qualifications:
- Transmission and substation engineering experience with electrical utility or EPC supporting utilities.
- Medium voltage and distribution engineering and design experience is a plus.
- Data center integration experience.
- Professional Engineering (PE) license.
Travel:
- Travel may be 20% of the time to support projects In various markets.
Expected Salary Range: $175,000 - $200,000 plus Bonus
