The Trauma Advanced Practice Provider is an integral member of the Trauma Service. The Trauma APP is under the direct supervision of the Trauma Chief resident and/or Trauma Attending. Primary responsibility is the management of high acuity complex multi-organ trauma patients in the critical and acute care setting, collaborating with residents as part of the Trauma surgery team. The Trauma APP is a skilled and knowledgeable clinician specializing in the management of acute and critically injured patients. The Trauma APP is proficient in conducting comprehensive physical assessments, documenting clinical findings, and performing both diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. The APP roles includes ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, coordinating consults, initiating, and managing treatment plans, prescribing appropriate medications and interventions, and delivering direct patient care to optimize outcomes in high-acuity settings.
Duties and Responsibilities
Provide direct clinical services for critically ill patients with traumatic injuries and/or multi-system failure, according to established protocols and utilizes evidence-based clinical practice standards under the supervision of the Trauma chief and Trauma Attending.
• Provide clinical support and patient care in management of trauma patients.
• Demonstrate the ability to manage high acuity patients requiring specialized monitoring and care.
• Assess the daily status and progress of patients, collaborate with the Trauma Chief residents, Trauma Attending, and/or other respective teams.
• Obtain patient health histories, complete physical examinations. Document patient assessment findings accurately and completely, noting pertinent normal and abnormal findings.
• Document daily progress notes, medications, interventions, diagnostic tests, laboratory and diagnostic results, interventions, obtain consent when requested, document patient outcomes including adverse events.
• Participate in daily Trauma rounds, work autonomously within the Trauma team.
• Order and interpret appropriate diagnostic and laboratory tests. Explain necessity, preparation, and anticipated effects of procedure(s) to patients, family, and staff.
• Perform or order approved therapeutic or diagnostic procedures, diagnostic studies based upon patient's clinical status.
• Evaluate and interpret patient data to determine management and plans of care.
• Perform Tertiary Trauma Survey, as needed.
• Provide continuity of patient care by facilitating and coordinating communication between pertinent health care teams, patients, and family.
• Perform procedures such as obtaining specimens, suturing, wound care, establishing central access, inserting A-lines, placement of tube thoracotomy, and management of conditions produced by trauma or infection.
• Identifies and solves complex clinical problems requiring use of advanced practitioner skills and communicates directly with trauma chief and/or attending.
• Provide patient and family-centered care, communicating with patients and family. Identify educational needs of the family and participate in teaching opportunities.
• Role model advanced practice professionalism through communication, mutual respect, leadership, ethical decision-making, critical thinking, and problem-solving expertise.
• Participation and support of accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities within the Trauma Department.
• Assume other duties for Trauma/Critical care as assigned by Trauma chief.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.
Minimum Experience: Demonstrated experience which would provide the knowledge and skill necessary for successful performance as a Mid-Level Practitioner.
Required Education:
For Nurse Practitioners: Successful completion of an approved Nurse Practitioner training program that conforms to the Board of Registered Nursing standards; graduate of an accredited Nursing program required; Bachelor’s degree in Nursing preferred.
For Physician Assistants: Successful completion of a Physician Assistant program of instruction in primary health care approved by the Physician Assisting Examining Committee; OR NCCPA for Physician's Assistant.
Required Licenses/Certifications:
For Nurse Practitioners:
- Possession of a valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse and certification as a Nurse Practitioner issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing;
- Possession of a current Furnishing Number issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing AND Certification by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) OR American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP); OR Certification by the National Certification Corporation as a Women’s Health Care Nurse Practitioner (WHNP).
For Physician Assistants:
- Possession of a valid Certificate as a Physician Assistant issued by the California Board of MedicalQuality Assurance.
- A valid Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) Number AND Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
PREFERRED
Qualifications
• Skills and knowledge in trauma and surgical critical care.
• Theoretical foundation in: Anatomy, physiology, general medicine, pharmacology, emergency, and critical care medicine.
• Experience in performing history and physical examination, recognition of injury patterns, identification of acute and/or chronic medical problems, and formulation of appropriate plans of care.
• Effective intrapersonal skills and efficient communication strategies to communicate in a conducive, nonjudgmental, informative manner.
Preferred Experience: One year in area of specialty (i.e. Cardiology, Neurology, G.I, Rheumatology, Orthopedics, Hematology, etc.), PG Residency of ED experience or post-graduate training in area of responsibility.
Nurse Practitioner:
• MSN or DNP graduate from an accredited school of Nursing with Adult Acute Care NP specialty.
• 3-year minimum bedside ICU RN, Emergency RN, Critical Care Flight RN OR 1 year Trauma Surgery APP experience required.
• Specialization as an Acute Care NP or Adult-Gerontology Acute Care NP with minimum one (1) year licensed working NP experience in trauma, general surgical or acute care surgery.
• National board certification as a Nurse Practitioner issued by one of the following recognized national certifying body or organization: • American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC); and
• American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB)
• Current medication furnishing license with schedule II-V (NP-F Registered Nurse Practitioner Furnishing) issued by the California Board of Registered Nurses; and
• DEA Drug Enforcement Agency - US Dept of Justice - Drug Enforcement Administration; and
• Valid NPI, CURES enrollment
Physician Assistants:
• Minimum one (1) year licensed working PA experience in trauma, general surgical or acute care surgery.
• DEA Drug Enforcement Agency - US Dept of Justice - Drug Enforcement Administration; and
• Valid NPI, CURES enrollment
Preferred Licenses/Certification:
• Valid Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
• Valid Basic Life Support (BLS), Certificate
• Valid Advanced Trauma Life Support certification
The pay range for this position reflects the base pay scale for the role at Alameda Health System. Final compensation will be determined based on several factors, including but not limited to a candidate’s experience, education, skills, licensure and certifications, departmental equity, applicable collective bargaining agreements, and the operational needs of the organization.
