Emergency Ultrasound Fellow

Job Summary: The Highland Emergency Ultrasound Fellow will provide clinical emergency medicine services, teaching and scholarly work for Alameda Health System. Services will be on-site at Highland Hospital.

Job Responsibilities
Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship at Alameda Health System - Highland
The Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship at AHS – Highland is a 1-year program designed to train leaders in the field of emergency ultrasound through establishing technical expertise, developing and improving teaching abilities, and providing research opportunities and experience. Graduates of this fellowship typically go on to academic or expert positions, usually in the role of emergency ultrasound director or fellowship director. The Highland Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship was one of the first in the country and has trained multiple fellows over the past years. The fellowship has been accredited by the Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship Accreditation Council (EUFAC) since May 18, 2021. The requirements to graduate from the Emergency Ultrasound fellowship are those set by EUFAC and in alignment with our own division’s requirements.
The Emergency Ultrasound fellow will also function as faculty within the Emergency Medicine residency program at Highland Hospital in Oakland. This position requires providing academic and clinical support to our emergency medicine residents throughout the one-year fellowship.

Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship Requirements
• Fellows must personally perform, acquire, and interpret at least 1,000 point-of-care ultrasound exams during the course of the 1-year fellowship
• Fellows must attend weekly emergency ultrasound division educational conferences
• Fellows must participate in weekly point-of-care ultrasound quality assurance meeting
• Fellows must lead 5 point-of-care ultrasound image acquisition sessions per month
• Fellows will provide educational support via point-of-care ultrasound image acquisition sessions and lectures to medical students and residents on the emergency ultrasound rotation
• Fellows will participate in a research or scholarly activity to be completed at the end of 1-year fellowship program
• Fellows will participate/present in at least one local, regional or national professional and scientific society meeting

Academic Faculty Clinical Requirements
• Provide appropriate medical services to all patients presenting to the Emergency Department
• Provide services for the contracted number of shifts for Emergency Ultrasound fellow at Highland set forth by the AHMG Compensation Committee. This shall include backup-up duties as determined by the Chair and consistent with the departmental scheduling policy.
• Supervise and teach residents, interns, medical students, and other learners in the delivery of patient care and practice of Emergency Medicine.
• Foster a supportive and safe clinical learning environment for residents, students, and learners.
• Work and collaborate with consultants and subspecialists in a collegial fashion in service of patients.
• Model exceptional clinical practice and communication skills for learners in our training programs.
• Deliver care based on best practices and evidence-based medicine, adhere to applicable standards of care, medical ethics, and policies and protocols.
• Complete documentation in the Electronic Health Record in a timely fashion, commensurate with any policies set forth by AHS Health Information Management or its proxy
• Provide on-line base hospital medical control and consultation for Alameda County EMS providers.
• Be responsible, on a case-by-case basis as the need arises, for taking all actions necessary to facilitate the appropriate transfer of a patient to or from another medical facility to gain access to the appropriate services and medical care needed.
• Consult with EM QRC leadership to achieve better clinical outcomes for patients, improve the quality of patient care and maximize the efficient utilization of physician and hospital resources.
• Report to departmental leadership and hospital administration, as needed, material concerns about quality of care, delay in delivery of medical services to patients, or any patient concerns.
• Comply with the requirements and standards of AHS (Alameda Health System) Medical Staff bylaws, The Joint Commission (TJC) and any other accrediting agencies designated as well as all applicable AHS policies, code of conduct, rules, and regulations.
• Support departmental operations and nursing leadership in implementing new procedures, controls, and systems to promote and facilitate quality, cost controls, reimbursement functions, standardization of products and equipment, and any other requests made by hospital.
• Provide effective and timely communications to referring or admitting physicians, patients and family concerning the clinical status of each patient admitted through the Emergency Department.
• Perform other select duties as assigned by the department Chair or Vice Chair.

Residency Faculty Requirements Conference/Didactics (ACGME Requirement)
• Active participation in Emergency Medicine Residency teaching conferences including Wednesday Weekly Didactics and Monthly Journal Club/Follow Up
• Attendance is expected unless post-nights/swings, on-duty, engaged in other clinical, teaching, or administrative duties, or on PTO/vacation/leave.
• Develop and deliver a minimum of three core lectures per year
• Participate and contribute to monthly small group sessions, follow up conferences, procedural teaching sessions, and simulation sessions and Resident Professional Development

Scholarly Work (ACGME Requirement)
• Participate in at least one academic project while serving as faculty. This may include research projects, case reports, subject reviews or book chapters.
• Represent the residency program locally and nationally at professional conferences, through committee work, policy work, multi-institutional collaborations, and other speaking/teaching engagements.

Evaluation and Assessment (ACGME requirement)
• Provide timely and specific feedback to residents at the conclusion of each clinical shift.
• Complete written evaluations in the Residency Management System (New Innovations)
• Contribute to the continual improvement of evaluation methods and tools.
• Complete the ACGME Annual Faculty Survey.

Academic Departmental Administration
• Complete all educational and competency modules set forth by AHS or AHMG for compliance and educational purposes
• Attend bi-monthly staff meetings unless working clinically/post-shift/on PTO/on leave.
• Must be flexible and assist the department with teaching / administrative / and clinical needs as they arise - agreed upon jointly with the EM Chair.

Qualifications:

Education: Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) is required.

Required: Board Eligible or Board Certified in Emergency Medicine.

Required Licenses/Certifications: Possession of a valid license to practice medicine in the State of California.

Required Licenses/Certifications: Valid DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) license

Required Licenses/Certifications: Compliance with Emergency Medicine (EM) Board mandated education and training to maintain State licensure and board certification.

Pay Range: $57.69 / Hour

The pay range for this position reflects the base pay scale for the role at Alameda Health System. Final compensation will be determined based on several factors, including but not limited to a candidate’s experience, education, skills, licensure and certifications, departmental equity, applicable collective bargaining agreements, and the operational needs of the organization. Alameda Health System also offers eligible positions a generous comprehensive benefits program.
