- Primary duty is to perform phlebotomy drawls and obtain suitable laboratory specimens per protocol consistent with age-specific needs.
- Perform pre-analytical procedures for neonates, infants, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients. Provide age-specific patient education for patients and for the patient’s family by conserving invasive and noninvasive laboratory procedures.
- Utilize hospital/laboratory software to manage patient orders, enter data and obtain information.
- Perform clerical activities for the operations of the laboratory, which include but are not limited to answering phones, scanning documents, and faxing results.
- Maintain proper documentation of patient records and laboratory records. Processes and documents per protocol to assist in a timely manner completion of laboratory testing.
- Utilizes resources to obtain specimen collection, processing, and billing information for reference laboratory specimens.
- Stocks and maintains specimen collection and supplies and inventories.
- Perform test analysis pertaining to diagnostic tests as defined as wave complexity.
- Operates glucometers that can always get them approved and posted and centrifuges. Troubleshoot technology problems and perform preventative and basic repairs as needed.
- Documents glucose meter results and reacts appropriately to abnormal life-altering results to ensure proper patient care, request supervisors implement for situations that are beyond the individual scope of training.
- Performs and documents quality control in proficiency testing the glucometers.
- Performs quality assurance just for test orders and pre-analytical processes.
- Participate in performance/quality improvement data collection and incorporate performance improvement activities into the daily routine to ensure laboratory testing is accurate, timely, and meets customer needs.
- Report incidents/potential incidents to the immediate supervisor and assist in the federal completion of incident reports in a timely manner.
- Provides coverage on a flexible schedule (on call in emergency situations) as necessary, to ensure proper staffing for laboratory workload and other laboratory-associated activities.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- A minimum of a high school diploma
- Training and/or experience in phlebotomy/point of care testing
- License or certification for phlebotomy/point of care testing and or medical assistant
- Possess such qualities as accuracy, dependability, flexibility, and confidentiality.
- Excellent human compassion and customer service skills.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Requires prolonged standing, sitting, walking, and typing on a computer terminal.
- Requires frequent bending, stooping, and stretching.
- Subject to frequent stress and fatigue.
- Requires manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination for easy and skillful use of hands when working with patients and equipment.
- Requires the ability to lift items weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Requires good speaking and hearing skills to deal effectively with the public.
- Requires corrected vision and hearing within normal range.
- Requires an ability to react calmly and effectively in stressful situations.
- Requires verbal ability to communicate with patients and hospital staff and form perception to observe pertinent details.
- Requires an ability to work where activities are characterized by frequent change.
- The Laboratory Department and Grafton City Hospital encounter patients ranging from newborns to the elderly.
TYPICAL WORKING DEMANDS:
- The majority of work is done in a laboratory setting.
- Continuing education seminars may require attendance outside the laboratory setting.
- Daily contact will occur with patients, patients' families, and other departments within the hospital.
- You may be exposed to some toxic substances, medical preparations, and other conditions that are common to a clinical environment.
- Responsible to the Clinical Laboratory Director and Medical Laboratory Director
