Position Overview:
The Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) for Behavioral Health Hospitals would collaborate with the physicians to treat and care for the primary medical illness in the inpatient behavioral health hospital to address the needs of children, adolescents, and adult patients. Additionally, the FNP will coordinate and perform essential functions physicals for students at Chicago Public Schools (CPS), ensuring compliance with CPS requirements.
Behavioral Health Facilities:
- Under the supervision of the family practice physician, the FNP will perform H&Ps and physical exams of patients admitted to the behavioral health facility.
- FNP will address only medical concerns for admitted behavioral health patients.
- Function under the established hospital bylaws, policies, and procedures approved by the medical staff organization and Board of Directors.
- Transcribe timely and accurate nursing and progress notes in the patient's medical records.
- Report any significant change in the patient's diagnosis to the attending psychiatrist and family practice physician.
- Coordinate his/her regular schedule and on-call schedule regularly with facility supervision and with the Family Practice Physician.
- Prescribe, administer, and manage medications for medical conditions, monitoring their effectiveness and adjusting as necessary.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant laws and ethical standards governing mental health care and patient privacy.
CPS Student Physicals Coordination:
- Organize and conduct essential physical functions for CPS students to ensure they meet their school and sport physical requirements.
- Maintain accurate records of physical and communication results with CPS and coordinators as needed.
- Communicate care plans with families and CPS teams if needed.
Education/Certification:
- Advanced Family Practice Nurse (FNP)
Work Experience:
- 1 to 3 years of experience in a family practice setting, preferably experience in a behavioral health hospital or program.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to walk and stand for long periods of time.
- Ability to use and type on a computer.
- Ability to lift or carry up to 50 lbs.
