Job Summary
Respiratory Therapist help monitor patient progress and administer breathing treatments based on the instructions provided by our team of Physicians. They may work with patients near the beginning or end of life. The RT will work with other members of the medical team to develop and carry out a treatment plan and modify the plan.
Essential Functions
- Provide and administer all aspects of respiratory care therapeutics to inpatients and out patients
- Assess therapeutic needs, response and outcome
- Recommend modifications and discontinue therapy as appropriate
- Practice within the scope of service as stated in the Department Policy and Procedure manual
- Conducting and monitoring prescribed therapeutic and diagnostic procedures
- Maintaining artificial and natural airways
- Performing pulmonary function testing
- Performing hemodynamic monitoring and other physiologic monitoring
- Documenting information to a patient’s medical record/maintaining accurate and complete records
- Communicating assessments and updates with members of the healthcare team
- Assembling, maintaining, and calibrating respiratory therapy equipment
- Identifying and remedying respiratory care equipment malfunctions
- Communicating with patients and patient families
- Educating patients on disease prevention and lung health
- Educating patients on the use of inhalers and inhalation devices
- Performing testing to assist in diagnosis, treatment, and research

Minimum Education/Certifications
Graduate with certificate of completion from an AMA approved Respiratory Care Program
Licensure: Certified or Registered Respiratory Therapist by the NBRC and State of New Jersey
Certification:
BLS-CPR
ACLS: Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support
Minimum Work Experience
2+ years’ active therapy experience required.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: Must be willing to work holidays, weekends and provide additional coverage as needed
Physical Demands/Working Conditions
- Must be able to demonstrate independent and critical thinking as well as creativity and versatility in handling
- Complex clinical and interpersonal situations
- Be able to work under stressful conditions and irregular hours
- Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients
- Standing and walking for extended periods of time
- Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range
- Manual finger dexterity, eye hand coordination
- Occasional lifting or carrying items / supplies weighing up to 60lbs
- Occasional moving of large oxygen cylinders and equipment such as ventilators and air compressors
- Exposure to infectious diseases, chronically and acutely ill patients
- Exposure to disinfecting solutions, cleaning agents, sharps and other hazards and unpleasantness associated within the scope of a normal respiratory care department
- Rotation of schedule hours as required by the department to provide appropriate staffing levels throughout all shifts
- Must assist in the orientation of new employees
