A Mechanical Design Engineer working in a sewerage treatment plant (STP) is responsible for designing, selecting, and supporting the installation of mechanical equipment used to treat wastewater safely and efficiently.
1. Design Responsibilities
• Design mechanical systems used in wastewater treatment processes.
• Prepare equipment layouts, piping layouts, and mechanical drawings.
Design systems for:
• Pumps • Blowers • Mixers • Screens • Sludge handling equipment • Aeration systems
Ensure designs meet project specifications, environmental regulations, and safety standards.
2. Equipment Selection
• Select suitable equipment based on plant capacity and process requirements.
• Evaluate vendor technical specifications.
• Prepare technical data sheets for equipment procurement.
• Review supplier drawings and approve them.
3. Engineering Calculations
Perform calculations for: • Pump sizing • Pipe sizing • Flow rates • Pressure losses • Power requirements
• Ensure equipment efficiency and reliability.
4. Drawings and Documentation
Prepare and review:
• Material Submittal preparation • Mechanical General Arrangement (GA) drawings • Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID) • Equipment layout drawings • Fabrication drawings
Use software like: o AutoCAD o SolidWorks o Autodesk Inventor
5. Coordination
Coordinate with: • Civil engineers • Electrical engineers • Process engineers • Contractors Ensure mechanical systems integrate properly with plant structures and controls.
6. Site Support
Provide technical support during: • Equipment installation • Commissioning • Testing
