JOB TITLE: Lead Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Technologist
POSITION SUMMARY:
Performs a variety of specialized MRI scans and imaging procedures. In addition to performing the full scope of MRI Technologist work, the Lead Technologist provides day-to-day technical and workflow leadership for the MRI service line, including daily assignments, staff training and competency, MRI safety, supplies, and schedule coverage. Partners with the Lead CT Technologist on shared department standards.

- Accurately interpreting a physician’s scanning instructions, administering contrast materials, preparing and operating the MRI scan equipment and positioning the patient to capture the appropriate images.
- Being responsible for the care of patients of all ages, relying on past experience as well as professional training with the geriatric and pediatric patient to meet these standards.
- Using all safety forms the Imaging Department provides prior to bringing a patient into the MRI exam room, and ensuring MRI staff do the same.
- Safely managing the environment of care while providing patient care and services.
- Delegating assignments in a courteous manner.
- Assisting in ensuring full compliance with all Department of Health regulations applicable to MRI.
- Seeing that staff members support all quality, safety measures and practices.

The Lead Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Technologist supports continuous improvement and high standards by:
- Contacting the Imaging Manager regarding equipment malfunctions, supply requests and any unusual situations that depart from standard policies and procedures.
- Functioning using independent judgment, initiative, and ingenuity when performing technical procedures, and serving as the technical resource for MRI staff.
- Managing and monitoring the equipment used to acquire MRI images.
- Developing and organizing diagnostic quality images prior to giving them to the radiologist for interpretation.

- Maintains and enforces MRI safety screening for patients, staff, and non-imaging personnel, and controls access to the MRI exam room.
- Sees that staff members support all quality, safety measures and practices.
- Partners with the Lead CT Technologist on shared department standards, cross-coverage, and call schedule.
- Escalates staffing, performance, equipment, and budget matters to the Imaging Manager.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required Education:
- Associate of Arts degree or Associate of Science degree or hospital-based certificate program. Training will be reinforced by the following methods: continuing education required for licensure, video presentation (Swank), seminars and conferences.
- WA State License, ARRT (Radiology) (MR) certifications.
Preferred Certification:
- Graduate of an AMA approved school of Radiologic Technology. High school diploma or equivalent required. CPR certified.
Required Experience:
- A minimum of 2 years of MRI experience.
Skills:
- A MRI job skills checklist will be completed at the time of hire.
- Strong positive interpersonal skills.
- Problem solving ability, time management skills.
- Possess organizational skills to function successfully in a fast paced work environment.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. Additional languages preferred.
- Basic computer knowledge.
- Ability to work with other members of the healthcare team to meet patient needs.
- Ability to interact in a positive manner and to communicate well with patients, families, co-workers, employees, supervisor and other hospital employees.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Occasional exposure to chemicals and odors. Exposure to bodily fluids while assisting physician with biopsy procedures. Working in the presence of a magnet for prolonged periods of time. Exposure to blood is possible when administering contrast injections. Transporting patients outside during inclement weather to the MRI Trailer.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Ability to grasp firmly with both hands and lift up to twenty (20) pounds routinely throughout the shift. Standing, walking, sitting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, twisting, reaching, handling, kneeling, and wrist and digital dexterity. Patient lifting, ambulating, and transfer of patients in wheelchairs, on gurneys and beds, and for use of mechanical lifts. Concentration, attention to detail, and corrected vision are needed to produce the best possible images.
