POSITION SUMMARY
The Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting blood specimens and other approved patient samples for laboratory testing while ensuring patient safety, specimen integrity, and compliance with all applicable federal, state, and organizational regulations. This position provides excellent patient service, accurately identifies patients, performs venipuncture and capillary collections, prepares specimens for transport and testing, maintains required documentation, and supports daily laboratory operations.
What you will be doing
- Performs venipuncture and capillary blood collection on patients of all ages using accepted laboratory procedures.
- Properly identifies patients using approved patient identification protocols prior to specimen collection.
- Verifies test orders and ensures all required information is complete before specimen collection.
- Labels specimens accurately and immediately at the patient's side according to laboratory procedures.
- Processes specimens by centrifuging, aliquoting, packaging, and preparing for in-house or reference laboratory testing.
- Monitors specimen quality and rejects or reports unacceptable specimens according to laboratory policies.
- Adheres to OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard, CDC infection prevention guidelines, HIPAA, CLIA regulations, California Department of Public Health requirements, and all organizational policies.
- Properly disposes of biohazardous waste and sharps according to regulatory requirements.
- Participates in competency assessments, continuing education, and mandatory training.
- Assists with front office or laboratory support duties as assigned.
What you will bring to the team
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Completion of a California-approved phlebotomy training program
- Current California Certified Phlebotomy Technician I (CPT I) or Certified Phlebotomy Technician II (CPT II) certification issued by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), Laboratory Field Services, required.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross preferred or required upon hire if required by department.
- Must maintain all required certifications and licenses throughout employment.
- Previous phlebotomy experience in a clinical, physician office, hospital, or laboratory setting preferred.
- Experience working with laboratory information systems (LIS) and electronic medical records preferred.
- Thorough knowledge of venipuncture and capillary collection techniques.
- Knowledge of specimen collection, handling, processing, storage, and transportation requirements.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Understanding of CLIA, OSHA, HIPAA, infection prevention, and laboratory safety standards.
- Basic computer proficiency, including EMR/LIS systems and Microsoft Office applications.
Travel Requirements
- Travel between company offices, laboratories, or clinic locations may be required to support operational and patient care needs.
