SUMMARY:
The Respiratory Therapist is a compassionate and skilled healthcare professional who provides respiratory care to support the health, safety, and well-being of individuals with developmental disabilities and complex medical needs. The Respiratory Therapist assesses respiratory conditions, manages ventilators, airways, respiratory equipment, and therapies, administers treatments and medications as permitted, provides education and training to staff, individuals, and families served, responds to respiratory emergencies, and collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to promote optimal respiratory health and quality of life. This role also serves as a clinical resource, supporting best practices in respiratory care and helping to ensure the safe and effective delivery of respiratory services across the organization.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assess, monitor, and evaluate respiratory status of individuals receiving supports.
- Administer prescribed respiratory therapies, including oxygen therapy, aerosol treatments, airway clearance techniques, CPAP/BiPAP management, tracheostomy care, and ventilator support as applicable.
- Perform respiratory assessments and document findings accurately, completely, and in a timely manner in accordance with organizational policies and regulatory requirements.
- Monitor and maintain respiratory equipment, ensuring proper function, safety, and infection-control practices.
- Participate in the management and oversight of ventilator and respiratory support programs in collaboration with physicians, nursing staff, and the Director of Respiratory Services.
- Assist with rounds, respiratory equipment reviews, troubleshooting, and implementation of physician-directed respiratory care plans.
- Administer medications and respiratory treatments within scope of practice and in accordance with agency policy, physician orders, certification requirements, and applicable regulations.
- Complete Medication Certification training and maintain required certifications to support medication administration responsibilities as assigned.
- Assist with respiratory equipment inventory management, vendor coordination, equipment repairs, replacement recommendations, and emergency supply readiness.
- Provide education and training to staff, individuals served, and family members regarding respiratory care procedures and equipment.
- Serve as a clinical resource and subject matter expert for respiratory care, providing guidance and consultation to interdisciplinary teams regarding respiratory health and support needs.
- Respond to respiratory emergencies and provide appropriate interventions within scope of practice.
- Participate in mock codes, simulation-based education, emergency preparedness activities, and respiratory-related drills to enhance staff readiness and individual safety.
- Attend medical appointments, hospital visits, interdisciplinary meetings, community outings, and other activities as needed to support individuals with respiratory care needs.
- Utilize respiratory monitoring technologies and clinical data to identify trends, support early intervention, and promote positive health outcomes.
- Support quality assurance, quality improvement, incident review, and outcome-monitoring activities related to respiratory care services.
- Ensure compliance with organizational policies, physician orders, state and federal regulations, Medicaid requirements, licensure standards, infection control practices, and professional standards of care.
- Participate in the development, implementation, and review of respiratory care protocols, procedures, and best practices.
- Maintain accurate clinical records and complete all required documentation, reports, audits, and follow-up activities in a timely manner.
- Participate in ongoing professional development and maintain all required licensure, certifications, and competencies.
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support the health, safety, and quality of life for individuals served.
QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS/ABILITIES
The Respiratory Therapist must possess a strong knowledge of respiratory care procedures, equipment, therapies, and current best practices. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent communication, organizational, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with individuals served, families, healthcare providers, and interdisciplinary team members. The ability to work compassionately and effectively with individuals with developmental disabilities and complex medical conditions is essential. Experience in long-term care, residential services, rehabilitation, community-based healthcare, or similar settings is preferred. Additional experience with tracheostomy care, ventilator management, staff education, and clinical training is highly desirable. The Respiratory Therapist must be able to adapt to changing situations, exercise sound clinical judgment, prioritize multiple responsibilities, and promote a person-centered approach to care while maintaining compliance with applicable regulations and professional standards.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- Graduate of an accredited Respiratory Therapy program with current Respiratory Therapist license in the State of Ohio.
- Current Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)
- 2-3 years prior Respiratory experience
