Ocean Discovery Institute uses ocean science to empower young people from underserved urban communities of color to transform their lives, their community, and our world as science and conservation leaders. Working in the San Diego community of City Heights, we provide continuous science opportunities paired with mentoring and the tools to overcome challenges so that young people unlock their potential. Our programs are provided at no cost to our students. Our students believe that a scientist is someone they can be. They achieve because of it. They lead by entering high-paying STEM fields and making a difference.
The Teacher Fellow will mentor, teach, and offer supports to students attending public schools in City Heights, empowering them to Believe, Achieve, and Lead in science and conservation. Additionally, as a Teacher Fellow at Ocean Discovery Institute, you will gain professional skills in education, student management, nonprofit management, and science, as well as grow your network that will prepare you to take the next steps towards your future career.
Responsibilities/Deliverables:
·Deliver hands-on STEM lessons to students in K-12th grade, both in the field and at the Living Lab
·Facilitate program coordination such as supply management, curriculum enhancements, student management, and co-instructor facilitation.
·Work with students and the community in numerous roles (in-person mentorship, program instruction, homework support, field trips, and community events) that increase engagement and support students on their path to academic success and beyond.
·Support with org-wide activities that celebrate accomplishments and generate support for the organization.
Requirements:
·Be an aspiring educator (traditional or non-traditional).
·College graduate with a bachelor’s degree.
·Proficient in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
·Pass a Livescan (fingerprinting / background) check.
·Have reliable transportation, a valid Driver’s License, vehicle insurance, and a clean driving record.
Qualifications:
·Current eligibility to work within the United States without sponsorship.
·Passion for, commitment to, and understanding of Ocean Discovery Institute’s mission.
·Demonstrate a deep understanding of the community we serve, such as graduating from our programs, living in the community of City Heights or a similar community, or relevant work experience.
·Dedicated to the concept of promoting equal opportunity for young people from underserved urban communities of color.
·Ability to work as part of a team in a fast-paced, dynamic and variable (indoor and outdoor) work environment.
·Interest in STEM, conservation, youth development, education, social justice, or non-profit fields.
·First Aid/CPR Certified (or ability to become certified).
Desired Skills/Experience:
·Fluent in Spanish or Vietnamese; proficient written and verbal communication skills.
·Supports youth physical and emotional well-being.
·Ability to work outdoors and on uneven terrain.
·Has experience with Ocean Discovery Institute, either as a program participant, or volunteer.
Time Commitment:
·Full-time positions available.
·Seasonal (school year) 9.5 months of full-time work (approx. 30 - 40 hrs/week).
·Must work daily Monday through Friday with shifts varying through mornings, afternoons and early evenings.
oOccasional weekend hours as needed to support events.
·Position will have work provided at our Living Lab, at partner schools, partner sites, and outdoor sites within SD County.
