Job Summary
Under the guidance of Perioperative management and staff, the Operating Room Assistant (ORA) will participate as a member of the perioperative patient care team performing direct and indirect perioperative tasks for patients having surgical procedures and to assist the staff in turnaround of surgical rooms Assists the perioperative care team in many aspects of patient care. Performs a variety of technical duties to assist in preparation of patient and surgical suite for procedures. Functions under the supervision of the licensed staff and reports to the Director of Perioperative Service
Essential Functions
- Assists in patient positioning, transport, prepping and draping.
- Appropriately identify and safely transport patients to and from Surgical Services according to procedure.
- Delivers specimen to lab, obtains blood for transfusion, secures supplies and equipment from other departments within the facility.
- Provides support for the Surgical Services department by turning over O.R. rooms. Room turnover tasks will include obtaining beds, returning supplies to case cart tech or sterile processing, returning x-rays, replacing respiratory equipment for next patient and general room cleanup procedures.
- Performs indirect patient care duties under supervision of licensed personnel and if PCA/PCT can provide direct patient care as needed.
- Creates stock lists, obtain and stock O.R. Organize and restock storage areas within the Operating Room
- Works with a variety of equipment and is responsible for retrieving, preparing and assisting in the use of equipment. Maintain, test patient care of equipment.
- Serve on unit-based committees as a representative of the Perioperative technician group
- Responds during emergency situations to assist as directed by the MDA, RN and CRNA present.
- Performs other duties as assigned within scope of practice.
Working hours:
Monday to Friday 8:00am to 4:00pm
Must be willing to work holidays, weekends and provide additional coverage as needed.

Minimum Education/Certifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Preferred PCA/ PCT trained
- Knowledge of surgical procedures and medical terminology
- Ability to lift and move heavy equipment and patients
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Good organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work well under pressure and in a fast-paced environment
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays
Minimum Work Experience
- 1 year experience in an Operating Room (Preferred)
- Enrolled in a surgical tech course (Preferred)
