Job Title: Medical Director, Outpatient Surgery

Reports To: Chief Medical Officer
Dyad Partner: Director of Outpatient Surgery

Position Summary

The Medical Director of Outpatient Surgery is a practicing, board-certified surgeon who provides both clinical care and executive leadership within the ambulatory surgery center. This role combines active surgical practice with strategic oversight of clinical quality, physician governance, operational performance, and regulatory compliance.

Working in a dyad leadership model with the Director of Outpatient Surgery, the Medical Director ensures delivery of safe, high-quality, patient-centered, and cost-effective surgical care while modeling the organization’s core values:

Clinical Responsibilities

The Medical Director is expected to serve as a clinical role model and maintain high standards of surgical performance, professionalism, and patient safety. In addition to administrative leadership duties, the Medical Director will:

Maintain an active surgical practice within the outpatient surgery center.

Provide direct patient care, including pre-operative evaluation, surgical procedures, and post-operative management.

Ensure appropriate patient selection and adherence to ambulatory surgery safety criteria.

Maintain clinical productivity consistent with agreed-upon benchmarks.

Participate in call coverage and peer case review as applicable.

Adhere to all medical staff bylaws, credentialing requirements, and continuing medical education standards.

Model best practices in documentation, patient communication, and surgical outcomes.

Demonstrate compassionate, patient-centered care that builds trust and strengthens community reputation.

Maintain board certification and unrestricted licensure.

Promote transparency in clinical decision-making and physician governance.

Serve as a trusted liaison between physicians, administration, and executive leadership.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership & Governance

Lead development and implementation of medical staff policies to ensure quality, safety, and regulatory compliance.

Ensure physicians and providers adhere to surgery center guidelines, accreditation standards, and applicable laws.

Promote teamwork among physicians, recognizing individual contributions while advancing shared goals.

Serve as a liaison to the Medical Executive Committee and executive team on patient care matters.

Review unusual incident reports and proactively address operational clinical concerns.

Administer policies related to physician medical and administrative practice.

Serve as a visible role model for professional excellence and values-based leadership.

Quality Assurance & Performance Improvement

Develop, implement, and monitor quality assurance and quality improvement programs in collaboration with leadership and committees.

Direct monitoring of:

Clinical outcomes

Chart audits

Utilization and appropriateness of services

Patient satisfaction surveys

Physician performance and charging patterns

Recommend and implement improvements to enhance overall quality of care.

Promote adoption of evidence-based best practices.

Coordinate review and resolution of complaints related to physicians or clinical care.

Review malpractice complaints and claims in partnership with compliance and risk management.

Ensure compliance with Department of Health regulations, professional standards, and all local, state, and federal requirements.

Lead development of systems to track outcomes, performance indicators, and improvement initiatives.

Dyad Leadership & Physician Engagement

Serve in a dyad leadership structure with the Director of Outpatient Surgery to achieve clinical and operational excellence.

Share accountability for financial and operational performance targets.

Support recruitment, onboarding, and retention of high-performing surgical staff.

Resolve conflicts between physicians or departments in a constructive and timely manner.

Address physician grievances and initiate disciplinary action when conduct is inconsistent with organizational values.

Establish clear communication channels to ensure prompt resolution of clinical or service issues.

Foster professional development opportunities for clinical and administrative staff.

Strategic Development & Financial Stewardship

Participate in strategic planning to maximize productivity, operational efficiency, and service growth.

Contribute to budgeting processes and establish responsible financial goals.

Maintain cost-effective practice standards while achieving the highest quality of care.

Align medical management strategies with service improvement initiatives, including patient satisfaction and complaint resolution.

Update organizational design to support evolving patient and market needs.

Organizational Leadership & Committee Participation

Maintain close collaboration with administrative leadership and meet regularly with the Director of Outpatient Surgery.

Serve as medical advisor to executive leadership as needed.

Actively participate in:

Steering Committee

Operating Council

Strategic Planning meetings

Quality Management meetings

Utilization Management meetings

Section and Medical Staff meetings

Qualifications

Education & Licensure

MD or DO from an accredited institution

Board Certification in a surgical specialty

Active, unrestricted state medical license

Eligible for medical staff privileges

Experience

5–7+ years of clinical surgical practice required

Leadership experience in ambulatory surgery center or hospital setting preferred

Demonstrated experience in quality improvement and regulatory compliance

Knowledge & Skills

Strong understanding of outpatient surgical operations

Knowledge of accreditation standards with CMS

Data-driven performance management

Financial and operational acumen

Effective communicator and collaborative leader

Skilled in conflict resolution and change management

Physical Demands

Requires the ability to:

Sit and work at a computer for extended periods.

Move throughout clinical and administrative areas of the facility.

Participate in clinical oversight activities within surgical and patient care environments.

Work Environment

Split responsibilities between clinical surgical practice and administrative leadership.

Work performed in an outpatient/ambulatory surgery center setting.

Exposure to operating room environment, including surgical procedures and clinical oversight activities.

Combination of clinical oversight, administrative leadership, and strategic planning responsibilities.

Frequent interaction with physicians, nurses, clinical staff, executive leadership, and community partners.

Participation in meetings, committee work, and performance review sessions.

May require early morning, evening, or occasional weekend availability to support surgical schedules, urgent clinical matters, or organizational initiatives.
