Job Preview
The Physical Therapist assists patients in reaching maximum performance. In doing so, evaluates, plans, and implements therapeutic programs including prevention, identification, correction and alleviation of acute or prolonged movement dysfunction of anatomic or physiologic origin. Evaluates patients; motor and neurological capabilities, pelvic floor experience preferred or willingness to become certified, revise physical therapy programs as patients’ progress is noted and instructs patients in posture and therapeutic procedures to be continued at home. May train therapy Assistants, Support Staff and others as requested, orient students, delegate most of the patient load and provide coverage in most of the department’s clinical areas. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care that is appropriate to the ages of the patients served.
Responsibilities
Evaluates patients’ physical and functional status including musculoskeletal system, neurological system, and functional mobility skills in activities of daily living. Includes gathering information from the patient chart, patient and/or family.
Analyzes evaluation results and sets appropriate short- and long-term goals consistent with treatment plan.
Selects, administers, and monitors treatment such as modalities, therapeutic exercise, transfers, gait training, and other functional mobility training.
Determines appropriate assistive devices to develop functional mobility skills. Instructs patient and/or family in care and use of the equipment.
Reassesses patients’ response to treatment, adjusts program accordingly, and coordinates treatment with patients, families, physical therapist assistants, and other health care disciplines, and communicates treatment changes to physician as appropriate.
Recommends other disciplines, programs, agencies, and equipment to patient and/or family, as appropriate.
Schedules and coordinates treatment with the physical therapy staff and other disciplines.
Maintains accurate and timely documentation including evaluations, re-evaluations, progress notes, discharge summaries, daily treatment records, staffing reports, billing records and related material.
Plans and documents appropriate home programs. Instructs patients and patients’ families in appropriate continued exercise or therapy programs and in use of therapy techniques and assistive devices.
Participates in discharge planning with physicians, nursing and social services personnel to ensure patients have appropriate assistance and continuation of rehabilitation at home or in other care setting.
Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by reading appropriate books, journals and other literature and attending related conferences, seminars and the like. Attends mandatory department, Medical Complex meetings, and other work-related educational programs.
Develops and maintains a positive working relationship with department and Medical Complex personnel, patients, students, and outside agencies.
Supports and is involved in the Medical Complex’s continuous quality improvement efforts designed to increase patient outcomes, increase patient satisfaction, and improve the utilization of the Hopedale Medical Complex’s human, capital, and physical resources.
Assists the Director in recommending, implementing and communicating policies and procedures within the Rehabilitation Department and Support Services. Recommends new or revised procedures and practices to increase the effectiveness of services in accordance with Hopedale Medical Complex accreditation and regulatory requirements.
Compensation details: 42-50 Hourly Wage
