JOB TITLE: Certified Wound Nurse
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Certified Wound Nurse works under the direction of a Provider in a wound consult and care role, providing advanced wound care assessment, treatment planning and care coordination for both inpatient and outpatient populations at Snoqualmie Valley Health. This role also provides education and guidance to primary nursing staff to support best practices in wound care management.
This position sets and monitors care plans for complex wounds, serves as a resource to providers offering outpatient services and procedures, and oversees quality of care for wound management while developing quality improvement initiatives as needed.
This role supports the hospital’s mission and values by fostering trust, promoting excellence in wound care outcomes, encouraging innovative approaches to wound prevention and treatment, and strengthening relationships with patients, families, and care team partners.

The Certified Wound Nurse demonstrates integrity, transparency, and compassion in all interactions by:
- Providing clear, accurate, and timely communication with providers, primary nurses, and dieticians regarding patient wound status and progress.
- Notifying the care team when wounds fail to progress as planned or have cause for concern.
- Providing evidence-based education to patients, families, and nursing staff regarding wound prevention and care techniques.
- Documenting all wound assessments accurately and uploading photographs to the patients chart as appropriate.
Obsess Over Excellence
The Certified Wound Nurse supports continuous improvement and high standards by:
- Developing and implementing evidence-based treatment plans for both inpatient and outpatient populations.
- Evaluating and photographing all wounds during patient appointments to determine progress and adjust care plans accordingly.
- Initiating performance improvement activities through departmental care teams to reduce wound complications and pressure injury rates.
- Ensuring wound supply carts are stocked, evaluating supply inventory, and presenting new product requests to the P&T committee.
Lead Innovation
The Certified Wound Nurse encourages creativity and forward-thinking approaches by:
- Implementing innovative wound treatment strategies and updating the wound supply product table with current best-practice products.
- Developing and implementing evidence-based strategies to prevent pressure injuries and other wound types across the continuum of care.
- Collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to develop solutions that improve wound care quality and patient outcomes.
Deepen Connections
The Certified Wound Nurse strengthens relationships with patients, staff, and care team partners by:
- Educating patients, families, and nursing staff on preventative measures and techniques to optimize wound healing, including discharge instructions for both inpatient and outpatient populations.
- Communicating proactively with providers, primary nurses, and dieticians to ensure coordinated, holistic patient care.
- Responding promptly to all new wound consult orders and maintaining communication through the departmental documentation system.
Key Responsibilities
Wound Assessment and Care Coordination
- Coordinate wound care for inpatient and outpatient populations.
- Initiate consultation for all new wound care consult orders.
- Perform direct patient care for complex wounds and document assessments.
Prevention and Treatment Planning
- Develop and implement plans for prevention of pressure injuries and other wound types.
- Develop and implement treatment plans for all wounds, both inpatient and outpatient.
- Provide education to patients, families, and nursing staff on preventative measures and techniques to optimize wound healing.
Quality Improvement
- Initiate performance improvement activities related to wound prevention.
- Work to reduce the percentage of patients who develop wound complications or pressure injuries.
Supply and Resource Management
- Evaluate wound care supply inventory and update the wound supply product table.
- Present new product requests to the P&T committee.
COMPENSATION RANGE:$43.79 - $80.11
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or higher; Certification in Wound and Ostomy Care.
Preferred Education: BSN from an accredited nursing program.
Required Licensure: Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in Washington State. BLS and ACLS certifications required.
Specialty Certification: Certification in Wound and Ostomy Care (CWOCN or equivalent). If not currently certified, must become certified within one year.
Required Experience:
- Minimum of 1 year of experience treating and managing complex wound care in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
Skills:
- Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills.
- Leadership ability and initiative.
- Proficiency with computer systems and documentation platforms.
- Effective phone and written communication skills.
- Communication skills for staff training and care coordination.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Work is performed on the inpatient nursing unit and outpatient wound area.
- Exposure to patients with complex wound conditions and healthcare environments.
- Flexibility to work extended or irregular hours as needed.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients.
- Manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination required.
- Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
- Requires ability to work under stressful conditions.
