We are recruiting for an Engine Technician - Mining Operations on behalf of our client. The successful candidate will maintain, diagnose, and repair diesel and petrol engines used in mining equipment, ensuring maximum equipment availability, reliability, and compliance with safety standards in a mining environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct routine servicing and preventative maintenance on mining equipment (e.g. haul trucks, loaders, excavators, generators)
- Diagnose mechanical and engine faults using appropriate diagnostic tools and manuals
- Repair, overhaul, and rebuild engines and associated components (fuel systems, cooling systems, turbochargers, etc.)
- Attend to equipment breakdowns and perform on-site repairs to minimize downtime
- Inspect, test, and commission engines after repairs
- Maintain accurate maintenance records and job cards
- Ensure adherence to mine health, safety, and environmental standards
- Monitor equipment performance and recommend improvements
- Work closely with maintenance teams and supervisors to ensure efficient operations
Educational & Professional Requirements :
- National Certificate / Class 1 Journeyman in Diesel Plant Fitting / Motor Mechanics (HEXCO or equivalent)
- Skilled Worker Class 1 certification is highly preferred
- Apprenticeship training in diesel mechanics or heavy equipment maintenance
- Relevant certifications in heavy-duty machinery or engine systems are an added advantage
- Valid Class 4 driver’s licence (a Class 2 licence is an added advantage)
Experience:
- Minimum 3–5 years’ experience working with heavy-duty diesel engines
- Experience in a mining environment is strongly preferred
- Hands-on experience with major equipment/engine brands (e.g. Caterpillar, Cummins, Komatsu, Volvo)
Key Skills & Competencies:
- Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills
- Good understanding of diesel engines, hydraulics, and basic electrical systems
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and service manuals
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship
- Ability to work under pressure and in remote site conditions
- Good communication and teamwork skills
- High level of safety awareness
Working Conditions:
- Mine site-based (often remote locations in Zimbabwe)
- Shift work, including nights, weekends, and standby duties
- Exposure to dust, noise, and heavy machinery
- Mandatory use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
