Position Summary
USI Consultants, Inc. is seeking a hands-on HR Manager / Senior HR Generalist to manage core human resources operations for a growing civil engineering and surveying firm of approximately 100 employees.
This role serves as the primary and sole on-site HR leader and is ideal for an HR professional with 5–10 years of progressive experience who enjoys being close to employees and day-to-day operations, managing recruiting, onboarding, employee relations, benefits administration, and compliance in a practical, people-first environment.
It is best suited for someone who values taking ownership, visibility, and impact in a smaller organization and is comfortable operating as an HR department of one, with support from leadership and external partners.
This position reports directly to the Vice President of Finance and Human Resources and works closely with department managers across the organization.
USI has a stable workforce and values proactive, respectful employee relations and consistent HR practices.
Pay Range: $65,000 to $90,000
Key Responsibilities
HR Operations & Employee Support
- Serve as the primary point of contact for employee questions, HR guidance, and workplace concerns.
- Manage day-to-day HR processes including onboarding, offboarding, employee changes, and recordkeeping.
- Maintain and update HR policies, procedures, and the employee handbook to ensure consistency and compliance.
- Partner closely with leadership to support a stable, respectful workplace culture.
Employee Relations & Performance Support
- Coach and support managers on performance concerns, corrective action, investigations, and employee issues.
- Ensure fair, consistent handling of workplace matters with appropriate documentation and follow-through.
- Help leaders build accountability while maintaining trust and professionalism across the organization.
Recruiting & Hiring Coordination
- Lead full-cycle recruiting for professional, technical, and administrative roles.
- Coordinate job postings, candidate screening, interview scheduling, and offer processes.
- Partner with department managers to understand hiring needs and support steady workforce growth.
- Support internship hiring and occasional career fair participation as needed.
- Collaborate with external recruiting resources as needed to support hiring efforts.
Benefits & Payroll Coordination
- Administer employee benefits programs including medical, dental, vision, life, disability, and retirement plans.
- Coordinate payroll-related changes and employee data updates in partnership with the finance team and external vendors.
- Serve as the HR point of contact for benefits questions, enrollment, and employee support.
HRIS & Data Management
- Maintain accurate employee records and documentation within the HRIS.
- Support standard HR reporting needs such as headcount tracking, turnover monitoring, and compliance documentation.
- Ensure confidentiality, data integrity, and organized HR file management.
Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations.
- Maintain required HR documentation and support best practices in a professional services environment.
- Partner with leadership and outside counsel as needed on employment-related matters.
Training & Engagement Support
- Coordinate basic training efforts including onboarding, compliance training, and supervisor support.
- Assist with employee engagement activities and internal communication as appropriate for a 100-person firm.
- Support a culture of communication, accountability, and employee development as the firm continues to grow.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- 5–10 years of progressive HR experience, ideally in a hands-on HR Generalist or HR Manager role.
- Experience serving as the primary HR resource in a small or mid-sized organization strongly preferred.
- Working knowledge of employee relations, recruiting, benefits administration, and employment law compliance.
- Comfort managing competing priorities independently in a department-of-one setting.
- Experience with HRIS/payroll platforms (ADP, Paylocity, BambooHR, or similar); familiarity with Ajera or project-based professional services environments is a plus..
- Strong interpersonal skills, sound judgment, high integrity, and strict confidentiality.
