Job Summary
The Shop & Fleet Manager oversees the maintenance and repair of car haul trucks and trailers ensuring safe operation and roadworthiness of Company Fleets while leading and directing a team of diesel mechanics and other support staff.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Manage and coordinate all shop maintenance and repair activities for car haul fleet vehicles as well as passenger vehicles for port, ramp, and shop operations.
- Manage a team of diesel mechanics and other support staff providing guidance and training as needed.
- Coordinate workflow with shop lead(s) and track productivity to maintain a high level of shop efficiency.
- Coordinate fleet vehicle movement between shop, parking yards, 3rd party service providers and other locations in the region as needed.
- Oversee and manage mobile technician(s) to support Operations, drivers, equipment repairs and maintenance needs.
- Oversee parts inventory management, controls, and coordinate inventory cycle counts.
- Coordinate with Operations team on truck preparation and assignments for new hires and spares for breakdowns as needed.
- Manage and oversee the regular inspections and diagnostics on vehicles to identify and correct defects or issues. Ensure trucks are fully serviced and all safety issues have been addressed.
- Monitor DVIR reports and appropriately address all defects with fleet equipment.
- Manage and oversee repair orders for accuracy, verify warranty coverages if applicable, and coordinate with parts department on parts warranty coverages.
- Manage all shop work order billing for accuracy, completeness and timeliness.
- Collaborate with management to develop maintenance budgets and strategies.
- Maintain accurate records of repairs and maintenance schedules.
- Maintain and update licensing and permitting schedules in equipment management system. Coordinate with licensing and permitting staff, and ensure that all licenses and permits are updated and in truck permit books.
- Manage driver interactions including after-hours calls to ensure a high level of service satisfaction.
- Maintain Equipment files in compliance with DOT requirements.
- Ensure cleanliness and organization of the Shop for safe and efficient operation.
- Ensure shop compliance with PAL safety standards and company policies.
- Ensure shop meets and is maintained in compliance with all OSHA requirements.
- Oversee building and property maintenance.
- Manage building and facilities access for all employees.
Requirements
- Degree or Diploma in Mechanical or Automotive preferred and at least five years of experience as a diesel mechanic.
- Proficient with diagnostic systems and technology.
- ASE Diesel Certification is a plus.
- Bilingual – English and Spanish is preferred.
- CDL License is preferred.
- Strong leadership and team management skills with the ability to motivate technicians.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail to oversee multiple tasks and deadlines.
- Ability to work in a non-climate controlled environment, with long periods of standing, bending, stooping, kneeling and lifting
- Must be physically able to lift up to 75lbs.
Preferred Industry Experience
- Familiar with fleet maintenance programs, warranty processes and parts inventory management.
- Proven experience in heavy duty truck repair with a solid background in diagnostics and troubleshooting
- Knowledgeable on safety regulations related to truck maintenance is essential.
