Position Title: 3D/Digital Modeler

Base Pay: $22.39 - $36.62 / Hour

Walla Walla Foundry is one of the largest fine art fabricators in the world. Originally founded in 1980 as a bronze casting foundry, the Foundry produces work in a range of materials and using multiple processes. The size of sculpture can range from just a few inches to 50 feet tall, with finishing options ranging from raw to autobody-like paint finishes, polished metal, or patina.
ABOUT THE JOB:
The 3D/Digital Modeler is responsible for transforming artists’ concepts into precise, production-ready digital models. This role combines technical skill with creative problem-solving, including digital sculpting, file preparation for 3D printing and CNC, and collaboration with production teams to ensure smooth transition from digital design to physical fabrication. The Modeler also supports interdepartmental workflows and generates client-ready renders.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Create accurate digital models from a variety of artist inputs, including scan data, sketches, and sculptural references
Prepare models for 3D printing and CNC, including part breakdown and surface optimization
Generate renders and supporting documents for project reviews and client approvals
Maintain organized digital files in compliance with Foundry standards
Collaborate closely with CNC, Wax, Metal Shop, and 3D Print teams to ensure smooth transition from digital to physical production
Assist with 3D printing operations as needed
Conduct technical checks of 3d models to ensure production readiness
Identify potential issues early and escalate concerns to Project Managers / Supervisors
Troubleshoot modeling and production challenges, researching and applying solutions
Provide accurate time estimates and manage multiple projects against deadlines
Communicate clearly with clients, Project Managers and outside vendors when needed
Stay current with emerging modeling tools, 3D printing technologies, and digital fabrication practices
Requirements: REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree in Design, Fine Arts, Engineering, Animation, or related field; or equivalent professional experience
3+ years professional experience in digital sculpting, including experience in both organic and hard surface modeling
Strong digital sculpting ability with ZBrush or Blender
Proficiency in Rhino (preferred) or PolyWorks
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
Hands-on experience turning a digital model into a finished product
Experience with 3D scanning and programs such as Materialise Magics, or similar, a plus
Experience with Substance Painter, UV mapping, texturing and rendering complex models, a plus
Photoshop/Illustrator/InDesign skills, a plus
Mechanically inclined and and strong art fundamentals, a plus
Experience with or understanding of 3D printers/CNC machines, a plus
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to adapt in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
Strong collaborator; able to flex and adapt to a wide range of artists inputs and project needs
Honed time management skills; capable of balancing multiple projects simultaneously while meeting tight deadlines
Strong work ethic, including ability to work with confidential information
Passion for continuous learning and staging current with digital modeling and fabrication tools
Comfortable with contemporary art content, which may include the human body or nudity
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
This is an administrative role, based in an office environment. Position is sedentary, with extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation. Physical requirements include the ability to key on a keyboard, operate a mouse and keyboard, and stare at a screen for extended periods of time. Must be willing to enter production environments on occasion, as needed.
