Sworn Police OfficerPosition Overview
The Police Officer serves as a law enforcement officer on all Appalachian Regional Healthcare System campus locations, providing physical protection of life and property for patients, family, visitors, and staff. Responsibilities include safety and security duties such as firefighting and key and lock security. This role requires independent judgment in applying and enforcing laws, regulations, and hospital policies.
Compensation is commensurate upon education, experience, certification, and internal equity. Hiring compensation range starts from $26.00 /hour.

- Compensation is commensurate upon education & experience – range is $26.00 /hour or more (depending on education & experience). Benefits begin the first of the month following 60 days of employment from the new hire orientation date. This position is a non-exempt position.

Key Responsibilities
- Provide physical protection of life and property across all ARHS campuses.
- Enforce laws, regulations, and hospital policies with sound judgment.
- Respond promptly to security incidents and emergencies.
- Conduct patrols, monitor surveillance systems, and investigate security concerns.
- Maintain safety procedures, including firefighting and key/lock security.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, visitors, and staff to ensure a secure environment.
- Promote the ARHS Mission, Vision, and Values through professional conduct and accountability.
Position Requirements
Minimum Education:
- High school graduate required.
- Associate degree in law enforcement preferred.
Experience:
- 3 years of experience working in an office or clinic setting is required.
- 1 year of prior experience in a similar role with a similar scope is preferred.
Required Registration/License/Certification:
- Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) certification required.
- Probationary Certification issued by the N.C. Training and Standards Commission.
- Must hold a current F-9A firearms certificate.
- Must meet North Carolina state statute 74-E requirements.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to communicate courteously and effectively with the public, patients, families, and staff.
- Acts within the chain of command using positive verbal and non-verbal communication.
- Meets NIMS requirements for hospitals and law enforcement concerning Incident Command Structure and implementation.
- Knowledge of the continuum of care provided within the organization.
- Ability to demonstrate exceptional customer service to patients, families, staff, and physicians.
Physical Demands
- Lifts, positions, pushes, pulls, and/or transfers up to and greater than 50 pounds.
- Manual dexterity and mobility required.
- Prolonged, extensive, or considerable sitting, standing, and walking.
- Bending, squatting, twisting, and turning frequently.
- Near acuity: ability to see clearly at 20 inches or less.
Working Conditions
- Infrequently exposed to the risk of bloodborne diseases.
- Frequently exposed to hazards from electrical, mechanical, or power equipment, odorous chemicals, and unpleasant elements such as accidents, injuries, slippery surfaces, and uneven terrain.
- Subject to irregular hours, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Continuous standing and walking for periods equal to or greater than 8 hours per shift.
- Speaking, reading, and writing for more than 8 hours per day.
- Exposed to vibration and cramped spaces.
- Frequently lifts, carries, pushes, and pulls over 50 lbs per shift.
- Frequently bends, squats, kneels, twists, turns, and reaches multiple times per hour.
- Frequently exposed to close eye work and soft voices from distances greater than 3 feet.
- May be exposed to ionizing/non-ionizing radiation, including x-ray and microwave exposure.
