HIM Technician 1 ALG
Collect, maintain and make available to customers and authorized users, timely, accurate and complete paper and/or electronic patient health information following HIPAA regulations. Attends HIPAA trainings and takes other measure to remain current in information management related regulations; educates Health Information Management (HIM) and other hospital staff in HIPAA regulations.
Responsibilities:
- Handles patient requests for PHI following HIPAA/HITECH rules; coordinates patient access to PHI; enters patient care areas to respond to patient requests for PHI. Ensures releases are HIPAA compliant prior to processing.
- Keeps abreast of HIPAA/HITECH regulations; participates in educating HIM and other departments staff informally and with formal sessions every three months or as changes occur; assists with developing department guidelines for HIPAA releases.
- Attends HIPAA training seminars/webinars.
- Prepares invoices for record copies, enters payments, justifies balances due.
- Collects, maintains and makes available to authorized users timely, accurate and complete patient health information (PHI).
- Responds to customers entering office in a timely manner; answers telephone calls in a prompt and courteous manner.
- Prepares PHI for scanning following scanning procedure; transfers PHI from paper to electronic format by scanning records and indexing into EHR.
- Assigns deficiencies to physicians; generates physician notification letters; assists physicians with record completion; follows up on deficient and/or delinquent PHI to assure compliance with hospital policy and regulatory agencies.
- Reviews paper/hybrid/electronic PHI for completeness and files in designated areas according to applicable numeric and date filing system.
- Assembles, locates, pulls, electronically tracks and sees to the appropriate transport of PHI as requested by other departments.
- Operates computer to enter and retrieve data, type correspondence and reports.
- Retrieves all records of discharged patients from all units on a daily basis; checks against daily log to ensure receipt of all records; follow up on missing records.
- Generates physician notification letters; assists physicians with record completion.
- Periodically audits electronic PHI.
- Orders supplies for the department.
- Attends and partipates in monthly department meetings.
- Attends mandatory hospital and department inservices.
Education:
- High school diploma or GED required.
Work Experience:
- Previous experience in hospital office required.
