JOB SUMMARY
-
Supports the pharmacy department by assisting with many departmental tasks such as the preparation of medication orders, stocking the pharmacy, assembling and delivery of medications, regular cleaning of pharmacy preparation areas, and other assigned tasks under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

By reviewing and interpreting physician orders

By answering questions and requests

By investigating missing doses and automation issues

By appropriately referring inquiries to the pharmacist

MAINTAINS PHARMACY INVENTORY
-
By checking pharmaceutical stock to determine inventory level
-
By anticipating required medications and supplies
-
By placing and expediting orders as needed
-
By verifying the receipt of drugs and supplies
-
By removing outdated drugs from stock before they expire
-
By minimizing the inventory on-hand, limiting the acquisition of non-formulary medications from the wholesaler, returning of special-order medications that were not dispensed, and working with the pharmacists to find alternative medication options while reviewing physician orders that require special ordering.

By securely receiving and storing all controlled substances to prevent diversion.

By properly completing all controlled substance tracking paperwork, obtaining witnesses while refilling controlled drugs in Pyxis, and filing completed documentation appropriately.

By carefully reading medication orders, prescriptions, labels and medication packages.

By accurately preparing prescription labels with the correct medication

By calculating quantities for medications dispensed

By gathering medications needed to restock Pyxis and processing refills via ParX software.
-
By accurately packaging bulk drug packages into unit-dose packaging and properly recording all lot numbers and product expiration dates.
-
By carefully preparing liquid medications in oral syringes and completing log sheets.
-
By ensuring that all medications have their bar codes scanned to verify that the correct drug was selected and to work with the IT department to troubleshoot any bar code scanning issues so that it does not negatively affect nursing during the drug administration process.

MAINTAINS RECORDS

By filling medication orders and prescriptions for the pharmacist to check.
-
By entering patient medication list history into the EMR for use by the physician during the order entry process.
-
By checking drug deliveries to verify that all expected contents were included and that invoicing was correct.
-
By validation that refrigerator and freezer temperatures have been recorded per policy and that follow-up occurs for medications that experience out of range temperature excursions.
-
By recording all lot numbers and expirations for anything repackaged.
-
By completing all necessary paperwork for the handling of controlled substances and deliveries of medications via courier.

GENERATES REVENUES

By calculating, recording, and issuing medication charges.
-
Cross-charges departments accurately for any floor stock or special-order items.
-
ENSURES MEDICATION AVAILABILITY
-
By delivering medications to patients and departments in a timely manner.
-
By reviewing “Next dose due” times on pharmacy labels to ensure that all medications are delivered to the nurse on time for the next scheduled dose.
-
By delivering most medications directly to the nurse server in patient rooms so that nursing can easily find medications at the time of administration.
-
By delivering refrigerated medications directly to the refrigerator in the appropriate nurse med station.
-
By processing Pyxis fill reports via ParX and by scanning bar codes as part of the Pyxis refill process.
-
By responding to any stock-out situations or missing meds quickly so that there is minimal affect on the timeliness of patient care.

MAINTAINS SAFE AND CLEAN WORKING ENVIRONMENT
-
By complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
-
By cleaning all pharmacy work surfaces at least daily and as needed throughout the day.
-
By cleaning the pharmacy unit dose packaging machine between every medication packaged to ensure that products are packaged without any cross-contamination or concerns over cleanliness.

By accomplishing all required tasks as needed.

By assisting the pharmacist in charge or the pharmacy director with any other projects or assigned duties that require attention throughout the day.

By working with other members of the pharmacy staff to enhance efficiency and promote patient safety.

By working independently without being prompted by the pharmacist or by co-workers.
