Operating Room Registered NursePosition Overview
The operating room(OR) nurse provides specialized care to patients undergoing procedures in a sterile environment under local or general anesthesia. The OR nurse is responsible for monitoring and communicating with the physician and/or anesthesiologist changes in condition during the procedure. Tasks include keeping accurate counts of supplies, sponges, and assuring safety for the patient. The OR nurse works collaboratively with physicians using evidence- based practice, remains calm under pressure, and assures regulatory compliance with all regulatory and organizational policies/procedures. Previous experience in Intensive Care or Emergency Department preferred, but not required.

Compensation is determined based on education, experience, certification, and internal equity. Hiring compensation starts at $34.00 per hour.

- Compensation: Starting at $34.00/hour, depending on experience. Benefits begin the first of the month following 60 days of employment. This position is non-exempt.

Key Responsibilities
- Provide specialized care to patients undergoing surgical procedures, ensuring safety and comfort in a sterile environment.
- Monitor patients’ conditions throughout surgeries, responding quickly and accurately to changes.
- Collaborate with the surgical team, including surgeons, anesthesiologists, and specialists, to ensure the highest level of care.
- Maintain clear and accurate communication with patients, families, and healthcare teams before, during, and after procedures.
- Adhere to ethical standards and hospital protocols, including maintaining sterile techniques and accurate counts of surgical instruments.
- Foster a positive work environment by maintaining strong, professional relationships with colleagues and leadership.
Position Requirements
Minimum Education
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
Experience
- Previous experience as a registered nurse is required.
- One year of experience in a similar role is preferred.
Required Registration/License/Certification
- Current licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of North Carolina.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association required at the time of hire.
- Additional certifications, such as Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), must be obtained within one year of hire.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of and ability to work within the scope of nursing practice, as outlined by licensure and hospital policies.
- Ability to communicate effectively and courteously with patients, families, staff, and physicians.
- Competency in delivering safe and effective patient care in line with hospital policies.
- Ability to demonstrate exceptional customer service to patients, families, staff, and physicians.
- Familiarity with data entry and the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system.
Physical Demands
- Ability to lift, position, and transfer patients up to and greater than 50 pounds.
- Requires manual dexterity and mobility, including bending, squatting, twisting, and turning.
- Prolonged sitting, standing, or walking may be required.
- Near acuity: ability to see clearly at 20 inches or less.
Working Conditions
- Regular exposure to the risk of blood-borne diseases.
- Frequently exposed to hazards from electrical/mechanical equipment, chemicals, and bodily fluids.
- Subject to irregular hours, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and emergency situations.
- Continuous standing and walking for periods greater than 8 hours per shift.
- May be required to sit for extended periods greater than 4 hours.
