Medical Laboratory Technician – Summary & Key Responsibilities
Reports To: Laboratory Technical Specialist and Director of Laboratory Services

Position Summary
Independently performs qualitative and quantitative laboratory testing in assigned section(s) according to established policies and procedures. Identifies, troubleshoots, and resolves problems affecting test performance or results using professional judgment and technical knowledge.
Key Responsibilities
Laboratory Testing & Quality Control

Perform and document tests accurately according to protocols.

Notify physicians of critical lab values immediately.

Follow QA/QC procedures; identify and resolve pre/post-analytical issues.

Operate, calibrate, and maintain lab instruments.

Maintain proper records, logs, and documentation.
Specimen Handling & Safety
-
Prepare and process specimens (blood, urine, fluids).
-
Accession specimens and prepare for transport according to regulations.
-
Follow OSHA and universal precautions for lab safety and waste disposal.
Technical Support & Communication
-
Provide technical information to physicians and authorized personnel.

Maintain adequate inventory of supplies and reagents.

Participate in staff training, competency assessments, and assigned supervisory duties.

Assist in special projects and serve as charge tech when assigned.
Organizational & Compliance Responsibilities
-
Attend departmental meetings and complete mandatory education and health requirements on time.

Maintain current certification and BCLS (if applicable).

Qualifications
Education & Certification
-
Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or related science.
-
Graduate of a CAHEA-accredited MLT program.
-
Certification (ASCP, HEW/HHS, or equivalent) required within one year of hire.

Must meet CLIA requirements for high and moderate complexity testing and general supervision when applicable.
Experience
Skills & Competencies
-
Proficient in clinical lab testing, instrument maintenance, and QA/QC.

Strong problem-solving and multitasking skills in high-pressure settings.
-
Effective verbal and written communication.
-
Familiar with lab information systems and basic computer applications.
Working Conditions
-
Exposure to infectious agents, hazardous materials, and lab chemicals.
-
Physical demands include standing, walking, lifting up to 35 lbs., and manual dexterity.
