POSITION PURPOSE
-
Performs clerical, computer, and secretarial duties in the laboratory office. Solve limited problems with the computer and communicate with the hospital staff, physician’s offices, nursing homes, and patients. Performs venipunctures, gives patients instructions to properly collect non-blood specimens and performs non-technical and clerical functions related to specimen collection. A phlebotomist also performs point of care (POC) testing at the patient bedside.

Ability to read, write, hear, speak, and comprehend the English language.

PRINCIPLE ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES
-
Collection of blood specimens from various patient types using defined venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques. Status recording of the collection data and time in the Laboratory Information System.

Instruction of patients in the collection of non-blood specimens.

Performs point of care testing at the patient bedside.

Participates in the instruction of other support staff.

Maintains computer peripheral devices.

Maintains a clean work area.

Receives and records written or faxed orders from licensed independent practitioners for orders that are specific to the services provided by their department.
