The Clerk Phlebotomist/EKG Technician assists the nursing staff by performing technical and clerical task in the Pre-Admission Testing area. These tasks include the collection, handling and transport of specimens from the pre-tested outpatient to the collation of the lab data. In addition, the technician is also responsible for performing EKG’s. The technician will also assist with collating all data needed for the preparation of the charts for patients requiring next day (or sooner) surgery.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Clinical:
- Approach to patient is professional, reassuring and confident. Patients are processed in an orderly and timely manner.
- Knowledge and performance of basic and special
- Obtains most samples with maximum of two attempts; minimum number of hematomas; tourniquet left on less than one minute. Obtains 90% of samples with one attempt. skills using appropriate techniques and equipment is always evident (Hygiene, sterile equipment/technique, and Universal Precautions).
- Assures that specimens are properly collected in specified tubes and in amounts necessary for processing. Ensures that specimens are transported to the lab in a safe and timely manner.
- Performs all EKG’s obtaining an accurate tracing with minimal artifacts.
- Transports EKG diskette to EKG Department making certain to flag those tracings needed for the following day.
- Facilitates and Expedites X-Rays
- Arranges for X-Rays with Radiology Department. Directs the patient, or arranges for an escort to the radiology department.
Clerical Functions:
- Collects and collates patients lab, x-ray, and ekg resultsas needed.
- Makes copies of test result data and departmental forms as needed.
- Places calls to Registration for face sheets for SD cases and retrieves them back to P.A.T. Assists with all preparation of next day’s charts.
- Performs other related duties as directed.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
EXPERIENCE
- Two years minimum secretarial experience, clerical office experience with computer skills preferred.
EDUCATION
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
- Competency in phlebotomy and EKG tracing.
OTHER
- If applicable, the individual performing this job may reasonably anticipate coming into contact with human blood and other potentially infectious materials. Individuals in this position are required to exercise universal precautions, use personal protective equipment and devices, and learn the policies concerning infection control.
