Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Director of Laboratory Service-Canton, maintains overall operations of the Surgical Pathology and Cytology departments, including but not limited to accreditation, budgeting, and quality.
Areas of Oversight Summary:
The Surgical Pathology (histology) department performs various processing tasks (grossing, embedding, cutting, and staining) to prepare a wide variety of tissue samples for microscopic examination by a pathologist. Aultman’s full-service histology laboratory provides general histology, immunohistochemistry, and frozen section services. The laboratory processes over
Cytology (cytopathology) involves microscopic examination of small amounts of bodily tissue or fluid to look for abnormal cells, indicative of a certain diagnosis. Specimen types include PAP smears, urines, Fine Needle Aspirations (FNAs), CSF, as well as other fluid smears. The Aultman Cytology department processes almost 9,000 gynecologic and almost 3,000 non-gynecologic specimens annually.
Job Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science degree, including certification as a Histo Technologist, Cytotechnologist, or Medical Laboratory Scientist required
- Minimum 4 years’ experience working in a clinical and/or pathology laboratory required.
- Minimum 5 years’ laboratory supervisory experience preferred
- Master’s degree preferred
Department Specific Qualifications:
- Willingness and ability to fill the CLIA role of General Supervisor as defined by CAP for the following testing areas:
- Surgical Pathology
- Cytology

Responsibilities & Expectations:
- Manages and oversees all aspects of the Surgical Pathology departments including but not limited to accreditation, budgeting, and quality.
- Works with peers and leadership to achieve hospital and departmental goals.
- Introduces and demonstrates new procedures, programs and equipment to departmental and other hospital staff as appropriate.
- Oversees the selection, training/orientation and evaluates performance of staff. Makes recommendations for personnel actions.
- Develops, implements, and evaluates the quality and critical aspects of service programs/modalities provided by the department including proficiency testing and quality controls and takes appropriate action to report and address identified issues.
- Monitors and maintains compliance with all regulatory requirements, accreditation standards and hospital policies.
- Maintains department and equipment and seeks to develop new program enhancements and strategies.
- Reviews and develops laboratory policies and procedures.
- Is responsible for the department's operational excellence and ensures that quality services are delivered in accordance with applicable policies, procedures and professional behavior standards.
- Collaborates with other departments to create systems and problem solve on issues that impact departmental/organizational goals and patient care delivery.
- Actively participate in departmental and hospital committees and meetings as appropriate.
- Work closely with the Pathologists to improve processes and troubleshoot issues.
- Other responsibilities as assigned by the Laboratory Director.

Working Conditions:
- Work eight hours a day. This unit requires 24/7 coverage.

- Supervises a team of 19 direct reports including 2 Technical Specialists and various other testing personnel (histotechnicians, cytotechnologists, grossing technicians, and lab assistants).
