Description Summary:
The Director – Edge Data Centers will be accountable for managing the day-to-day operations of all edge data centers and coordinating the activities of the local and remote data center teams to deliver outstanding service to our customers in compliance with contractual requirements and industry best practices. As the Director of edge data centers, this individual will oversee all customer activity, including site upgrades, new installations, moves, adds, and changes. This role will implement the data center"s existing DC BLOX operating procedures and work with all data center operations teams to define, refine, and streamline processes as needed. They must also understand how to work with our contracting partners to scale the data center safely, securely, and efficiently through multi-year upgrade projects to meet contractual agreements and timelines.
The Director, Edge Data Centers will supervise and provide leadership and support to the local Data Center managers, Facility Managers, Technician(s) and contract Security Personnel in the Data Centers. These oversight responsibilities include ensuring that maintenance, security, capital improvement projects, PUE management, client designs, installations, and interfacing with suppliers and power utility providers are all attended to and performed with the highest industry benchmarked standards. This role will also oversee required safety protocols, ensure method of procedure (MOP) documentation is inline with best practices and completed for all activities, and help enforce ITIL-related processes at all sites.
Essential Duties:
- All customer activity commences in an orderly, safe, and secure manner, focusing on delivering superb customer support.
- Ensure processes are adhered to in identifying and verifying service-impacting events, and subject matter expertsare dispatched to support problem resolution.
- Communicate with internal teams to support status updates regarding open issues, and implement actions supporting root cause analysis, problem remediation, and lessons learned at all sites.
- Guide customer communications around planned and unplanned maintenance.
- Ensure safe and secure operating environments within DC BLOX data centers and correct or report any violations as prescribed in operating practices.
- Ensure detailed documentation of ticketing and service support calls is maintained.
- Ensure the data center supports efficient equipment/material receiving, shipping, asset management, and RMA processing.
- Responsible for monitoring performance measures and processes required for audit and operational compliance related to standard data center practices.
- Coordinate and maintain data center compliance with all requirements.
- Support adherence to standard and emergency operating procedures for edge data centers.
- Provide status reporting regarding data center service availability, performance, and capacity utilization as required.
- Manage vendors and partners responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of data center equipment.
- Ensure daily error log reporting and physical data center inspections for general health, power, cooling, hazards, etc.
- Coordinate equipment installation and delivery schedules by setting project plans.
- Directly participate and provide key input for all edge data center construction and expansion design and planning.
- Ensure 24/7/365 on-call rotation duties are met.
- Acts as a senior leader concerning all sites' electrical and mechanical systems expertise around process and MOPs.
- Helps hire and onboard data center managers for their region and supports them in staffing needs, including hiring, termination, and all other facets of leading a data center team.
- Acts as backup to the director of other regions or the SVP in charge of all sites.
- Ensure that the safety program for all sites and employees in your region is adhered to.
- Fully engaged with the build and overall design to help our Dev/Eng team properly commission the sites as they are built.
- Understands all aspects of a data center in order to create standards around operational readiness to meet customer go live dates.
Education/Training/Experience:
- 10 years of data center facility experience
- 10 years of experience working with data center facility equipment, including switch gear, chillers, pumps, UPS, PDU, Generator, Security Camera systems, and Security badging systems.
- 10 years of experience working in data center environments, including managing cross-connects, fiber connectivity, performance monitoring and alerting, carrier support, meet-me room management, upgrade projects in a live environment, and structured cabling in Data Center environments.
- 10 years of experience as a people manager (hiring, terminating, mentoring, etc.)
- Experience as Data Center manager at a 5+mW site, including:
- Experience with personnel, shift coordination, and management.
- Experience with daily reporting and incident escalation handling
- Experience with ITSM and ticketing systems
- Experience writing processes, MOP, SOP, EOP, and RCA documentation.
- Experienced and proficient with troubleshooting techniques and problem-solving in a 24/7/365 production environment
- Experience commissioning a 5mW+ data center and creating all MOP's, SOP's, and EOP's to become operationally ready.
- Proficient in cabling and labeling to provide customer cross-connects and sound documentation practices.
- In-depth knowledge of monitoring technologies and methodologies (EPMS, BMS, SCADA, DCIM)
- Expertise with certification processes and standards such as SSAE 18 / SOC 2 and NIST 800-171 / 53
- Must be proficient with Microsoft Office products, especially Excel.
- Experience with implementing and maintaining SOC 2, and other related certification programs.
