Position Title: Klawock Island General Manager

Summary
The Klawock Island General Manager leads all aspects of operations at Klawock Island, a growing destination featuring excursions, food & beverage, and retail experiences. This position is responsible for driving revenue, ensuring safety and guest satisfaction, and maintaining operational excellence across departments. The Klawock Island General Manager plays a key leadership role in building relationships with cruise lines, local stakeholders, and strategic partners while upholding the cultural values of the community and advancing long-term growth plans. This role requires a blend of strategic oversight and hands-on leadership to manage a high-performing team.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Operational Leadership
- Direct daily operations across excursions, F&B, and retail to ensure efficiency, profitability, and a world-class guest experience
- Supervise and support department managers and staff, fostering a positive, accountable, and service-driven culture
- Model exceptional leadership, employee engagement, and guest service standards
- Oversee facility maintenance, asset management, inventory control, and safety compliance
- Ensure environmental stewardship and sustainability initiatives are embedded in operations
- Drive continuous improvement and innovation across all areas of business
- Develop onboarding, training, and scheduling tools to support operational excellence
- Travel to other Huna Totem sites as needed to advise, assist, or train
Stakeholder & Community Engagement
- Cultivate relationships with cruise line representatives and shipboard staff to strengthen partnerships and grow visitation
- Monitor and adapt to trends in cruise industry marketing, sales, and destination development
- Build and maintain strong relationships with local businesses, tribal and city leadership, suppliers, and interest groups
- Ensure contract performance and manage external vendors as needed
- Collaborate with Huna Totem and Na-Dena` leadership on strategic development and investment planning
Financial Oversight
- Prepare and manage site-level budgets, staffing forecasts, and capital plans
- Develop and review pricing strategies for tours, retail, and food & beverage annually
- Monitor financial performance across departments and take corrective action to meet targets
- Support revenue growth initiatives including on-site and onboard sales optimization
Strategic & Long-Term Planning
- Lead the annual business planning process and contribute to long-range strategic planning
- Prepare reports and presentations for internal leadership and external stakeholders
- Ensure the site aligns with cultural, brand, and financial goals set by Huna Totem, Na-Dena` and partners
Other Duties
- Perform other tasks as necessary to carry out the objectives of Klawock Island and its parent companies.
Qualifications
- Minimum 10 years of experience in the tourism industry, preferably in Alaska, with a focus on operations and guest services
- Minimum 8 years of staff supervision experience
- At least 5 years managing a P&L with full responsibility for revenue and expenses
- Experience overseeing multi-unit operations such as tours, food & beverage, and/or retail
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and general business systems; aptitude for learning new platforms
- Skilled in purchasing, budgeting, and vendor negotiations
- Exceptional interpersonal, coaching, and team-building skills
- Proven commitment to cultural integrity and authentic guest experiences
- Bachelor’s degree in business, tourism, marketing, or a related field preferred
- Must have or be able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)
- Preferred: Qualified to serve as Facility Security Officer (FSO) under 33 CFR
Physical Requirements & Work Environment
- Ability to lift 40 pounds, stand for long periods, and walk 3+ miles daily
- Able to work extended hours and weekends during peak season
- Willing to reside on Prince of Wales Island within a 30min commute of Klawock Island
- Willing to travel up to 25%, including by small plane or ferry
- Comfortable working in remote and varied weather conditions
- Must hold a valid driver’s license
