Job Summary:
The Unit Secretary-Acute Care Tech performs under the direct supervision of the RN and is organizationally accountable to the Patient Care Coordinator and/or the Patient Care Manager. When performing Unit Secretary duties, is responsible for the secretarial aspects of patient care and the environmental management of the work unit. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide reliable assistance to the members of the team including nurses, manager, and physicians. Demonstrates good customer service skills when interacting with patients, visitors, and co-workers. As Unit Secretary, they assist in the preparation of birth certificates in the absence of the Unit Birth Certificate Clerk. He/she is involved in the implementation phase of the nursing process and is organizationally accountable to the Patient Care Manager. Performs other job duties as assigned. Helps ensure that the unit runs efficiently. When performing Acute Care Tech duties, he/she is involved in the implementation phase of the nursing process and is delegated tasks to achieve quality patient care.

- Must be able to operate the following equipment/machines: General office equipment – telephone, fax, scanner, label printer, computer, call light system
- Maintains competencies for restraints and suicide precautions and ability to be a 1:1 sitter as needed.
- Demonstrate ability to print off reports from EPIC, make service rounds, order supplies through Lawson System, make follow-up appointments and discharge phone calls as needed.
- Demonstrates the ability to promote a culture of caring through compassionate care, teamwork, and courtesy in all interactions with customers, both internal and external.
- Demonstrates financial responsibility by using supplies in a cost efficient manner.
- Must be able to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when handling ALL Hazardous drugs and contaminated body fluids and materials (PPE includes but is not limited to: nitrile gloves, disposable hazardous drug safe gowns, face shields, fitted tested NIOSH certified N95 respirator mask)
- Maintains own clinical skills staying current in skills, equipment and certifications including, but not limited to: Infant security system, Baby Friendly Initiative, and Family Centered Care.
- Prepares abstracts, verifies and transmits via computer newborn information for Birth Certificate and obtains parental authentication.
- Enters data and transmits on personal computer to Mississippi Department of Health.
- Prepares Acknowledgement of Paternity for the Office of Attorney General. Forwards to local registrar’s office.
- Responsible for mailing completed Birth Certificates and Fetal Demise Certificates to County Registrar; documents in Birth book date mailed.
- Prepares and verifies Medicaid reports on Newborn for State Social Service Department.
- Displays professionalism and courtesy in assisting patients and other departments at customer service counter and/or on the telephone.
- Performs other job duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education/Skills:
High School Diploma/GED required and Completion of an approved Nurse Aide training course preferred or the successful completion of Acute Care Technician course at FGH during clinical orientation is required.
Work Experience:
Computer literacy is required. Prior experience working as a Nurse Aide is preferred, but not required. Previous medical field experience and/or knowledge is preferred.
