Job Summary: Assumes responsibility for the processing, embedding, cutting, staining of surgical, and autopsy tissue, and for preparation and staining of cytopathology specimens according to established policies and procedures for Pathologist's examination and interpretation. Assumes responsibility for actively contributing to the sections productive and cost effectiveness. Assumes responsibility for recognizing results or problems that require referral to Section Supervisor, Pathologist or Administrative Director. Assumes responsibility for the correct management of the patient's body tissue, which includes preparing microscopic sections for diagnosis by Pathologist. Takes care of section administration including documentation and maintenance of supplies and equipment. Performs specialized, selective techniques required for diagnostic purposes. Participates in the Quality Assurance program.
Qualifications: Bachelors of Science/Bachelor of Arts in Chemical, Physical, Biological or Clinical Laboratory Science; or Medical Technology. Must meet the CLIA/CAP Education Requirements established to perform high complexity testing. (Minimum educational or experience requirements may be modified on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment) director as long as minimal CLIA requirements are met by the employee for the tasks being performed. Certification as a Histotechnologist (HTL) by ASCP or other accredited agency.) Strong understanding of histological techniques, laboratory procedures, and safety protocols. Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills. Effective communication and teamwork abilities. Previous experience working in a clinical laboratory setting is preferred.
