Description Summary:
The Director, Energy will be responsible for leading early-stage power engagement and utility company coordination across the North American footprint. This leader will ensure utility capacity is evaluated and secured at each campus to support data centers by developing power market intelligence; leading site power due diligence; negotiating power contracts; and fostering strategic utility engagement. Additionally, the Director, Energy will lead the execution of substation and utility build projects assigned. The Director, Energy will collaborate with leadership to meet the demands of growing responsibilities across the portfolio, and be willing to fill gaps in utility engagement, project management and execution, and power delivery engineering. This role will interface and collaborate with many critical stakeholders, including but not limited to pre-development teams leading overall due diligence and entitlements; operations leaders managing load growth projections; sales teams coordinating customer demands; and development team project leaders planning and building new data centers.
Essential Duties:
Strategic Leadership & Utility Engagement
- Build and lead a team focused on utility relationships, market research, and power capacity planning.
- Develop utility engagement strategies tailored to regional partners (IOUs, Co-ops, Municipals, ISOs/RTOs).
- Serve as the primary interface with utility companies for current and future data center sites.
Energy Procurement & Market Strategy
- Drive energy cost savings and resilience through innovative procurement strategies.
- Negotiate transmission and distribution rates and long-term power contracts.
- Identify and evaluate alternative and sustainable energy solutions.
Project Execution & Delivery
- Oversee utility substation development projects including budgeting, design, and construction.
- Coordinate internal and external resources to ensure timely power delivery to sites.
- Track milestones and maintain reporting on all active and proposed utility projects.
Cross-functional Collaboration
- Partner with Development, Legal, Sales, and Pre-Development teams to align utility planning with site growth.
- Contribute utility feasibility assessments for site selection and expansion decisions.
Education/Training/Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, energy management, or equivalent professional experience
- 5+ years of utility and energy projects, along with utility contract negotiations
- 3+ years of people leadership experience
- Knowledge of utility partners, including investor-owned / COOP / municipal utilities, and ISOs/RTOs
- Able to travel up to 25% of the time or as needed to support relationship building and diligence
- Demonstrated experience working directly with executives and collaborating effectively across all levels of the organization
