Beehive Industries is dedicated to Powering American Defense by revolutionizing the design, development, and delivery of jet propulsion systems to support the warfighter. Through the integration of additive manufacturing, the company aims to meet the growing and urgent needs for unmanned aerial defense by dramatically improving a jet engine's speed to market, fuel efficiency, and cost.
Founded in 2020, the company is headquartered in Englewood, Colorado, with additional facilities in Knoxville, Tennessee, Loveland Ohio, and Mount Vernon, Ohio. Beehive is committed to grow and advance the defense industrial base while manufacturing exclusively in the USA. This role will be located at our Loveland, Ohio facility.
Role Overview:
We are seeking a highly experienced, innovative and hands-on Principal Instrumentation Engineer to lead the development and execution of advanced instrumentation systems for gas turbine engines and subsystem test rigs.
The ideal candidate brings deep technical expertise in aerospace instrumentation, particularly in high-temperature, high-speed rotating environments, and has a proven track record of solving complex measurement challenges in gas turbine applications.
Responsibilities:
- Own and define an instrumentation technology development roadmap.
- Lead the design and implementation of comprehensive instrumentation strategies for full engine and rig-level testing, including rotating and stationary components.
- Serve as the technical authority on sensor selection, installation methods, and signal conditioning for dynamic and static measurements.
- Develop and deploy instrumentation solutions for temperature, pressure, vibration, strain, flow, displacement, and rotational speed — with a strong emphasis on rotating systems (e.g., slip rings, wireless telemetry, blade tip timing).
- Identify opportunities to leverage additive manufacturing to enable novel instrumentation strategies.
- Define instrumentation standards and calibration procedures.
- Collaborate with design, test, systems, and manufacturing teams to translate engineering requirements into practical instrumentation solutions.
- Participate in test planning, execution, and post-test data analysis to ensure data integrity and support root cause investigations.
- Oversee installation and integration of sensors in test cells.
- Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers and technicians.
- Interface with external vendors for custom sensor solutions and slip ring design.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
- 10+ years of experience in aerospace or industrial gas turbine instrumentation, including hands-on test campaigns and system development.
- Proven expertise in:
- Rotating instrumentation (slip rings, telemetry, shaft sensors)
- High-temperature and high-speed environments
- Dynamic measurement systems (vibration, strain, pressure)
- Data acquisition and signal conditioning
- Strong understanding of instrumentation fundamentals including sensor physics, grounding/shielding, and system calibration.
- Familiarity with DAQ platforms (e.g., National Instruments, Dewesoft) and data analysis tools (e.g., MATLAB, LabVIEW).
- Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional technical initiatives and mentor others.
- Excellent communication, documentation, and problem-solving skills.
- Due to contract requirements with the Department of Defense, U.S. citizenship is required for this role.
Preferred Qualifications: (any skill that could be a plus)
- Experience with gas turbine development, engine test cells, or propulsion certification programs.
- Experience working with additive manufacturing technologies
- Experience with blade tip timing, pyrometry, or wireless rotating telemetry.
Hands-on experience with rig instrumentation setup and troubleshooting
