The Pozez Jewish Community Center of Northern Virginia (Pozez JCC), located in Fairfax, Virginia, is a nonprofit, social service organization that builds community and enriches lives. The Pozez JCC is a community connector, offering a variety of programs and services on the main campus, online and throughout Northern Virginia through its many partnerships. Quality programs and experiences, based on Jewish values, include early childhood education, after-school & day camps, social programs for families raising young children, J-Fit health & aquatics activities, adult learning and cultural programs, inclusion and disabilities services, community impact through volunteerism, and more. Programs are open to people of all ages and backgrounds.
Location: Fairfax, VA (Hybrid)
Hours: 8-10 hours per week
Compensation: $30-35 per hour (commensurate with experience)
The Pozez JCC of Northern Virginia builds a welcoming and inclusive community through programs that connect people of all ages and backgrounds to Jewish culture, education, wellness, and one another. We are seeking a creative and proactive Communications Specialist to help amplify our mission and increase visibility for our programs, events, and community impact.
Position Summary
The Communications Specialist's primary responsibility is to develop and execute media strategies that highlight the Pozez JCC's diverse offerings, including Sunrise Day Camp for children with cancer and their siblings; Volunteer Services; Inclusion & Disability Services, and more. This role is ideal for a communications professional who thrives on storytelling, media engagement, and community impact and has the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment. The Communications Specialist will report directly to the Senior Director, Marketing & Communications and work closely with the Marketing & Communications Manager.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, write and distribute compelling, press-worthy stories that showcase the JCC's key programs, events, and community initiatives.
- Pitch stories to local and regional media outlets.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with journalists, editors, and producers
- Coordinate and facilitate on-site media coverage, including filming opportunities at events or programs.
- Maintain and regularly update the organization's media contact list.
- Collaborate with program staff to identify newsworthy content and align messaging with organizational goals.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with community partners.
- Share Pozez JCC programs on relevant community calendars, Facebook groups, and with community partners.
- Support marketing and communications activities of the department as assigned.
Qualifications
- 3+ years in public relations, journalism, or communications; equivalent experience is also acceptable.
- Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills.
- Proven success in media pitching and securing coverage.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities.
- Familiarity with the Northern Virginia and regional media landscape is a plus.
- Passion for community engagement and cultural programming.
- Experience with Microsoft Office
