Reports to the Director of Surgical Services. Works in collaboration with the Manager of Sterile Processing. Is responsible for assessing, planning, coordinating and evaluation of orientation, continuing education and in-service programs for staff which are competency based. Recommends improvements in the quality in sterile processing practices and standards. Serves as a resource to staff.

Provides staff education by:
- Facilitating needs analysis for staff to ensure that educational needs are identified and are the focal point for program development and enhancements; also ensuring that desired outcomes are met.
- Planning, designing and coordinating training, education programs and/or instructional materials to meet the customer's needs.
- Designing, preparing, evaluating and updating lesson plans, lectures, tests, materials, programs and courses to meet regulatory agency requirements and changing needs of the department.
- Teaching staff members by conducting training and providing group and individual instruction.
- Monitoring the orientee's progress/performance and providing instruction and counseling as necessary; also making appropriate recommendations to the department Director/Manager/Supervisor.
- Serving as an educational resource for the department.
- Assisting in the development of policies and procedures.
Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by:
- Completing other job-related assignments and special projects as directed.

Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:
- Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
- Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.
- Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
- Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
- Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
- Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
- Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
- Complies with established organization and department policies.
- Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience
- The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of Associates degree in surgical technology with current certification and three years surgical technology experience and or have 5 years certified sterile instrument tech experience in central sterile processing. Must obtain Certified Instrument Specialist within 6 months of hire.

- Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of and competency in area of decontamination of instrumentation, preparation, packaging of instruments and sterilization processes.

- Demonstrates well-developed interpersonal skills necessary to interface effectively with all levels of staff and customers and to conduct group and individual instruction.

Working Conditions
- Works in a bio-hazardous environment requiring frequent changes in the job demands.
- May be exposed to bio-hazards.
- Will be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) per policy.
- Operates equipment specific to the Central Processing Department (i.e. washer/decontaminators, cart washer, scope washers, ultra-sonic machines, steam sterilizers, and Sterrad sterilizers).
Physical Demands
- Requires the physical ability and stamina (i.e. to walk/stand for prolonged periods of time, push carts, lift at least 25 pounds (of various sizes and weights, etc.) to perform the essential functions of the position.
