Job Summary:
We are seeking an experienced Senior Estimator with a strong background in heavy civil site construction to join our team. This role focuses on estimating and bidding for large-scale site development projects, including earthwork, grading, excavation, utilities, road construction, and stormwater management. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in preparing detailed cost estimates, analyzing project plans, and collaborating with project teams to ensure competitive and accurate bids.
Key Responsibilities:
Estimating & Bid Preparation:
- Develop detailed cost estimates for site construction projects, including mass excavation, site grading, drainage, underground utilities, retaining walls, and paving.
- Perform quantity take-offs from engineering drawings, specifications, and geotechnical reports.
- Utilize Microsoft Office, Agtek, Bluebeam, or similar estimating software to prepare estimates efficiently.
- Analyze subcontractor and supplier proposals to ensure competitive pricing and scope alignment.
- Identify cost-saving opportunities and value engineering solutions while maintaining project integrity.
Subcontractor & Supplier Coordination:
- Solicit, review, and negotiate pricing from subcontractors and material suppliers to ensure competitive bids.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with key vendors in earthwork, utility installation, concrete, and paving.
- Ensure all subcontractor scopes are complete and coordinated with the overall project bid.
Cost Analysis & Risk Assessment:
- Research and analyze historical cost data, labor productivity rates, and market trends for accurate estimating.
- Assess project risks, constructability challenges, and site conditions to develop cost-effective solutions.
- Provide recommendations on alternative materials, methods, and phasing strategies to optimize project cost and schedule.
Collaboration & Reporting:
- Work closely with project managers, engineers, and clients to align estimates with project goals and budgets.
- Participate in pre-bid meetings, site visits, and post-bid reviews.
- Present estimates and bid strategies to executive leadership for approval.
- Support business development efforts by preparing conceptual and budget estimates for new projects.
Qualifications & Experience:
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field (preferred but not required).
- 7+ years of experience in heavy civil estimating, with a focus on site development, earthwork, underground utilities, road construction, and stormwater management.
- Strong knowledge of DOT (Department of Transportation), municipal infrastructure, commercial site development, and industrial sitework projects.
Technical & Industry Skills:
- Proficiency in estimating software such as Agtek, Bluebeam, and MS Excel.
- Strong understanding of site preparation, mass grading, excavation, underground utilities, and erosion control.
- Familiarity with lump sum, unit price bidding, alternative delivery methods (design-build, CM/GC), and public/private procurement processes.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, site plans, and geotechnical reports.
Soft Skills:
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and attention-to-detail skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication for interacting with clients, subcontractors, and internal teams.
- Ability to work under tight deadlines and manage multiple bids simultaneously.
