Union Labor Life Insurance Company is actively recruiting a Director, Life Claims, for our Group Life and Health Department located in our Silver Spring, Maryland office. The Director, Life Claims, is a strategic leader responsible for overseeing all aspects of group life and health claims administration. Ensuring accurate, timely, and efficient adjudication processes that meet regulatory standards and client expectations. This role leads a team of managers and claims professionals and partners cross-functionally to drive operational performance, optimize vendor relationships, and elevate customer experience. The Director also contributes to enterprise-wide initiatives, technology enhancements, and product servicing strategies.
Job Duties/Responsibilities:
- Strategic Leadership: Lead the vision, planning, and execution of claims operations, aligning department goals with company objectives and delivering best-in-class service to union clients and members.
- Client & Stakeholder Engagement: Serve as a key contact for high-profile client groups, trustees, brokers, and administrators. Proactively manage relationships and resolve escalated issues with a focus on long-term partnership and client satisfaction.
- Operational Oversight: Ensure accurate and efficient processing of claims across all lines of business within published service level agreements (SLAs) and regulatory guidelines. Maintain inventory and turnaround goals (e.g., clean claims processed within 10 business days).
- Performance Management: Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for accuracy, productivity, and quality. Provide leadership, coaching, and ongoing development for the claims team.
- Vendor Management: Manage relationships with third-party administrators and technology vendors. Track vendor performance against contractual obligations and implement continuous improvement initiatives as needed.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate with internal teams including Underwriting, Account Management, Compliance, Legal, and IT to streamline operations and implement changes in plan design or regulatory requirements.
- Technology & Innovation: Partner with the technology team to identify and implement automation, analytics tools, and self-service enhancements to improve operational efficiency and the claimant experience.
- Budget & Reporting: Develop and manage the department’s annual budget. Provide variance analysis and performance reporting to senior leadership.
- Risk & Compliance: Ensure compliance with state, federal, and ERISA regulations. Maintain internal controls and prepare for audits, including internal, regulatory, and client-specific reviews.
- Change Leadership: Lead change management initiatives related to process redesign, staffing, and implementation of new systems and tools.
- Performs other similar and related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- The successful candidate will Education: Bachelor’s degree in business administration, Health Administration, Insurance, or related field. Master’s degree or industry certifications (e.g., FLMI, HIAA) preferred.

- Experience: 7–10+ years of experience in group life, AD&D, or health claims with at least 5 years in a leadership role managing teams and operational strategy.
- Skills & Attributes:
- Demonstrated leadership in a regulated, client-facing claims environment.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Experience with claims adjudication platforms, CRM systems (e.g., Salesforce), and process automation.
- Proven ability to build high-performing teams and a culture of accountability.
- Knowledge of union health plans and Taft-Hartley benefit structures a plus.
